100s protest fuel price hike

Pro-democracy activists led hundreds of people in a rare march through Yangon in protest against hike in fuel prices last week. Some 500 people peacefully marched through the city's outlying neighbourhoods for one-and-half hours. They did not shout any slogans or hold up banners, according to eyewitnesses.

Activists marched in silence from Bago, a town 75kn northeast of Yangon. They did not chant slogans or wave banners, but people on the sidewalks clapped as they walked by. After about 30 minutes, the entire group was arrested and taken to local authorities for questioning, witnesses said.

About 15 people staged a fuel price protest Monday in Kyaukse, the hometown of junta leader Senior Gen. Than Shwe, 530 kilometers (330 miles) north of Yangon near Mandalay, even though one of the organizers was arrested the night before, said a participant who asked not to be named. The detained man was released Monday afternoon, he said.
