EMBL Courses and Conferences - 40 years of Training

Advanced training is one of the five core missions of EMBL. EMBL has been training scientists throughout its history, with the first officially recorded practical course dating back to 1977. Courses and conferences have always played a pivotal role, and the programme has continually grown over the last 40 years, today welcoming approximately 7300 attendees annually at all the EMBL sites.

EMBO Practical Course on Cryo-Electron Microscopy - Founded by Jacques Dubochet

“Early in the 80ies, in my group, Alasdaire McDowall discovered that water can be vitrified for cryo-electron microscopy, namely rendered solid without transforming it into ice - and, soon after, Marc Adrian († Dec. 2013) extended the finding into a simple method for obtimal cryo-em observation of any biological suspension (Adrian et al, 1984). Water, the traditional enemy of every electron microscopists, was suddenly what it ought to be: the beautiful major constituent of biological matter. The story had to be told and so came the first EMBO cryo-em course. Thirty years later, the course is still taught every year. The Adrian method continue to be the cornerstone of cryo-em while image recording and treatment has leaped forward. Our first 3-d reconstruction of isolated particles had a resolution of 35 Å (Vogel et al, 1986); the threshold of 3.5Å was recently reached (Maofu, 2013). A tenfold improvement in resolution is a lot, especially since it implies that the resolved volume element is 1000 times smaller. Not bad! Hundreds of people are working hard to push the limit still further. How far?” Jacques Dubochet Group Leader in Structural and Computational Biology (1978 - 1987), now retired Founder of the Cryo-Electron Microscopy that has taken place at EMBL for over 34 years

EMBL's Operon opens

EMBL's Operon conference centre and seminar facilities are built at Heidelberg. Lennart Philipson, an imposing Swede, in particular proud of ‘The Operon’, the new 300-seat auditorium at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). It symbolizes his drive, as director general of EMBL since 1982 (to 1993), to fulfill one of the original aims of the 15-year-old laboratory – that it should be a European centre for teaching and training in molecular biology, particularly for the benefit of the smaller countries that help pay the cost.

First meeting on Transcription takes place at EMBL Heidelberg

This is the longest running conference at EMBL - next year will be 24 years! “The meeting and the content of the science has changed dramatically over the 10 meetings from a very biochemical and basic to new much more integrated systems. There were many highlights over the years, for me the most interesting is the change of topics over the years, new technologies that have kicked have changed the way we are doing science quite a lot.” Alumnus (1985-1996): Henk Stunnenberg, Founder of the EMBL Conference: Transcription and Chromatin

The Forum on Science and Society begins its activities

“The newly established Forum on Science and Society was initiated by a public lecture in early March 1998 with a public lecture by Alain Pompidou, who is both a medical researcher and a member of European Parlament . I arrived shortly after that, and one of the first things we thought of to expand our Science and Society activities was to organize in-house discussion meetings following particularly interesting seminars. These latter activities have also turned out to enjoy considerable popularity among the EMBL community.” Halldór Stefánsson, Science & Society Programme Manager since 1998

Vicky Schneider, our new Training Programme Project Leader, had coordinated a year’s worth of training in record time since joining us in March 2007 beginning with ‘A two-day dip into the EBI’s data resources’. Our desktop team and Scientific Training Officer James Watson worked tirelessly to set up the IT system in the room. Find out more about the launch in EMBL’s newsletter: EMBL&cetera.
