First three symposia took place at Hirschhorn from 1975 - 1977 because there was no accommodation on campus. But with the opening of the guest house in 1978 having 22 beds, the conference could move to campus.

“Early in the 80ies, in my group, Alasdaire McDowall discovered that water can be vitrified for cryo-electron microscopy, namely rendered solid without transforming it into ice - and, soon after, Marc Adrian († Dec. 2013) extended the finding into a simple method for obtimal cryo-em observation of any biological suspension (Adrian et al, 1984). Water, the traditional enemy of every electron microscopists, was suddenly what it ought to be: the beautiful major constituent of biological matter. The story had to be told and so came the first EMBO cryo-em course. Thirty years later, the course is still taught every year. The Adrian method continue to be the cornerstone of cryo-em while image recording and treatment has leaped forward. Our first 3-d reconstruction of isolated particles had a resolution of 35 Å (Vogel et al, 1986); the threshold of 3.5Å was recently reached (Maofu, 2013). A tenfold improvement in resolution is a lot, especially since it implies that the resolved volume element is 1000 times smaller. Not bad! Hundreds of people are working hard to push the limit still further. New building that will have an auditorium to host the growing number of participants attending conferences at EMBL
EMBL's Operon conference centre and seminar facilities are built at Heidelberg. Lennart Philipson, an imposing Swede, in particular proud of ‘The Operon’, the new 300-seat auditorium at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). It symbolizes his drive, as director general of EMBL since 1982 (to 1993), to fulfill one of the original aims of the 15-year-old laboratory – that it should be a European centre for teaching and training in molecular biology, particularly for the benefit of the smaller countries that help pay the cost.
This is the longest running conference at EMBL - next year will be 24 years! “The meeting and the content of the science has changed dramatically over the 10 meetings from a very biochemical and basic to new much more integrated systems. Martin Hammond delivered Ensembl’s first off-site workshop. It was part of the Wellcome Trust’s Open-Door Workshops introducing freely available bioinformatics resources. Ensembl’s popular workshops later became the model for our own off-site training programme.
This is now run as an EMBO Conference, repeating again in 2018. 16 years strong.
First BioMalPar | EVIMalaR Conference “Biology and Pathology of the Malaria Parasite”. It is still being run by EMBL, the 13th conference is happening in May 2017

Our hands-on training programme started out in our purpose-built IT training room in EMBL-EBI’s East Wing. Vicky Schneider, our new Training Programme Project Leader, had coordinated a year’s worth of training in record time since joining us in March 2007 beginning with ‘A two-day dip into the EBI’s data resources’. With 416 people at the first EMBO|EMBL Symposium: The Non-Coding Genome, we almost reached capacity in our first year being at the ATC! The following 2 repeats have been full at 466 seats!
Train online, our freely available e-learning resource, was launched. The resource was built by our web development team, and contains courses written by dedicated experts. From the beginning we have ensured that all training materials are open access under the creative commons ShareAlike license.
The new ATC building has a total volume of 79,228 m³, which equals the contents of 240 mil. coke cans!
