Author's note: Here is fan-made timeline that I have thought of, since no clear temporal indicators (i.e. actual dates) are presented in the books and the TV show, except for 2307. Feel free to point out errors. I have not read the books completely, but I am aware of the events of all novels. Still, there might be details that escape my knowledge. Thus, unintended errors might sneak in.
Donald Trump's controversial presidency ends, after severing the US' ties with some of its allies and achieving better relations with the Russian Federation.
After nearly all European nations have acceded to both the Schengen and Euro zones, the European Union becomes far more centralized and achieves a de facto level of unification. The European Prime Minister becomes the leader of the newly established European state.
The spacecraft Ares III, the third manned vessel of the Ares series, leaves Earth for Mars, where it will be conducting a mission of 31 Martian days (sols).
Ares III arrives at Mars. Its crew begins the 31-sol mission.
The crew of Ares III is forced to evacuate Mars due to a heavy sand storm.
The Hermes begins its rescue mission of Mark Watney, after the astronaut was stranded on Mars
After its rescue mission was successful, the Hermes returns back to Earth.
The United States and Canada engage in an economic union, unifying their currencies into one (the North American Dollar).
Cancer becomes curable by the use of nanomedicine.
Mars numbers 10,000 - 15,000 people. Interplanetary flights leave Earth for Mars each eight years.
Overpopulation reaches critical levels. As does the environmental damage done to Earth's ecosystem.
Permanent human settlements appear on Luna.
The United Nations is restructured into including a unified global economic branch.
Mars reaches 400,000 people.
After acquiring heavy influence over its members, the United Nations becomes the de facto government of Earth and Luna.
The first elections to decide the Secretary-General and the rest of the executive branch of the UN take place across Earth.
Pollution is beginning a slow decline. Earth begins to recover. The UN, because successful, is on a continuous increase in power.
Mars reaches a population of eight million.
Because of Earth's unstable ecosystem, millions immigrate to Mars, bringing the colony's population to 12.4 million.
Mars reaches 100 million people in 2188 due to more and more people emigrating off Earth. The colonial government plans to expand the infrastructure of the planet in order to be able to accommodate the incoming immigrants.
Mars vows for independence from the UN, after becoming largely self-sustaining. The United Nations rejects their colony's demand.
Solomon Epstein develops the Epstein drive.
The Martian Congressional Republic (MCR) is declared. The rivalry between the UN and the MCR is ignited.
Due to the mass exodus from Earth, Mars reaches one billion inhabitants.
Mars can barely keep up with the exodus, reaching 4 billion people in 2236.
Manned explorations of the outer Sol system begin.
Ceres is fully colonized. Its axial rotation is sped up to simulate gravity.
The Earth-Mars Coalition Navy is created as the ultimate police force of the Sol system.
Due to advances in technology, the colonization of several Jovian moons takes far less time than that of Mars or the Asteroid Belt.
Earth reaches 25,000,000,000 people.
Several gigantic mirrors are constructed in orbit around Ganymede. Soon enough, the moon becomes the biggest food producer in the outer Sol system.
Ganymede assures its title as the outer planets' biggest food producer after the construction of several more domes. It is nicknamed the "breadbasked" of the outer planets.
The Ganymede Gin brand begins production.
New York City, the UN's capital, reaches 50 million inhabitants, becoming the most populous human agglomeration in the entire Sol system.
Chrisjen Avasarala becomes a governmental official for the United Nations, eventually rising to the position of Deputy Undersecretary of Executive Administration.
The Martian government issues a project for the exploration of Phoebe. Their finding are, however, nothing but odd.
James R. Holden begins working for the Pur'n'Kleen water company. He eventually asumes the position of XO.
Earth's population reaches 30 billion and seems to plateau there.
The Eros incident happens, infecting 1,500,000 (TV 100,000) people with the protomolecule.
Julie A. Mao goes missing. She is later found by Miller, Holden and his crew.
Eros moves towards Earth at an astronomical percentage of lightspeed. It is driven by protomolecule-infected Julie Mao. Eventually, Eros diverts its course and crashes into Venus, beginning to heavily alter the planet's surface and atmosphere.
Ganymede is attacked by protomolecule-human superpowerful hybrids. Out of her squadmates, only Bobbie survives.
Eventually, after the defeat of all protomolecule monsters, there is a spike in Venusian activity. A gigantic, ring-shaped structure is constructed by the protomolecule just outside Uranus' orbit. It is later revealed to be a hyper-stable wormhole.
Humanity begins its interstellar expansion phase, using the wormhole network.
The Free Navy attacks Mars and Earth, effectively declaring war against the entirety of humanity.
