Women in Library History

Women lives are often absent from the pages of library history, but their efforts were significant in the development of the modern library.

Here, I selected five women who broadened the opportunities for women in librarianship while making important contributions to the field from the 19th through the 21st centuries. Timelines like this are useful in examining history because they allow comparison between events and help users to see the bigger picture and change over time.

Nominated by President Barack Obama, Carla Hayden is the 14th Librarian of Congress, the first woman and African American to serve in the position.
