Crawdaddy Rhythm and Blues Club

Giorgio Gomelsky: A Man and His Vision

In late 1962, following a little friendly feud with Harold Pendleton, where Harold - says Giorgio - felt he was trying to steal Harold’s audience (oh, trad jazz v. R&B), Giorgio decided to get as far away from Soho as possible.;xNLx;;xNLx;He wanted something totally different to central London clubs. The demographics seemed to work against him in Richmond – there was not much going on there music-wise; however, there was Kingston Art School, and Giorgio knew that art students would likely be into new music.;xNLx;;xNLx;His idea was to give a band residency in order to build an audience, which spread further by word of mouth and written reviews.;xNLx;;xNLx;Giorgio’s efforts went a long way to making British (or Richmond, if you prefer) Rhythm and Blues both a national and global phenomenon.;xNLx;;xNLx;This timeline will not cover simply the chronological history of the Club, but also, in some detail, the social and cultural impact the Crawdaddy had on the bands and enthusiasts who frequented the club. Furthermore, it will delve into the continuing relevance of the Crawdaddy and music performed there, and the implications this has for the future of the Club and R&B.
