The old Normal Bell, first hung in the Normal School's belfry in 1870, is incorporated into the university's seal.

Pioneer men's and women's basketball is organized for the first time by Athletic Director Agnes O. Brigham.

Wisconsin Mining Trade School established

The Wisconsin Mining Trade School trained specialized technicians to work in the mining operations surrounding Platteville.

The Wisconsin Mining School gets a logo

Arthur Butterworth, Walter Buss, and Eugene DeWitt design a sign for the Wisconsin Mining School. The school name is engraved in the outer ring with a pick and shovel crossed in the center. The maul is added later to balance the design.

Land purchased for the Pioneer Farm

First purchase of land for the Pioneer Farm on west Pine Street. Additional land bought in 1915 and in 1925.

Jiggs is named the Mining School mascot

Jiggs, a black and white bulldog that hung around campus, is named the Mining School mascot.

First mechanics course offered

In Mechanics, a new course this year, the automobile and tractor were studied, with special emphasis on the use and care of internal combustion engines.

Pioneer Players was formed by Irma Borchers.

The "M" is constructed

Mining students begin construction of the "M" by placing rocks in a pattern on the southwest slope of a mound located a few miles east of the city. Completed the following year, the "M" measures 214 x 241 feet and consists of some 400 tons of whitewashed stone. The "M" stands for mining, honoring UW-Platteville's rich tradition in engineering. The lighting of the "M" is now an annual tradition at UW-Platteville Homecoming.

The mining school becomes the Wisconsin Institute of Technology.

Bearded Miners Club members take part in a beard growing contest during the 50th anniversary of the Mining School.

Wisconsin Institute of Technology merges with Platteville State Teachers College

The merging of the two schools resulted in the Wisconsin State College and Institute of Technology at Platteville.

University farm relocated

A dedication of the farm takes place at its new location on College Farm Road.

The institution name changes to the Wisconsin State University-Platteville.

Name changes to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville after joining the UW System

The university and all other public institutions of higher education in Wisconsin merge to form the UW System.

Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium is christened

Named after major contributor Ralph E. Davis, the existing stadium was renovated to include 10,000 seats. Opening day saw a 38-0 Pioneer win over Iowa Wesleyan College.

Distance learning program begins

University of Wisconsin-Platteville's distance learning program began in 1978, offering a single bachelor's degree: business administration. Three years later, its first graduating class numbered just five. Living up to the Pioneer name, UW-Platteville was the first public university in Wisconsin to deliver an entire degree online in 1999, a master's degree in project management. The first online graduating class consisted of 13 people in 2001. Fast forward to 2011 when UW-Platteville Online surpassed 1,000 graduates and our one-stop-shop approach to responding to student needs is a model for distance education programs nationally. We now reach more than 2,500 students worldwide offering eight degrees at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.

UW-Platteville is home to the Chicago Bears' summer training camp for 18 years

Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium and the surrounding practice facilities serve as the summer home of the Chicago Bears training camp. The Bears will continue to train here every summer until 2002.

Pioneer men's basketball team wins national championship

After their win in 1991, the Pioneers went on to win the championship again in 1995, 1998, and 1999. Go Pioneers!

The O-Zone is established

The O-Zone student section of the Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium, also known as the Orange Zone, is established to build a better backing for UW-Platteville athletics.

Student band wins MTV contest

Donut Run Club is founded

On Jan. 30, the Donut Run Club officially becomes a recognized student organization.

Residence Hall capacity reaches 3,700

With Rountree Commons opening in 2012 and Bridgeway Commons in 2013, residence hall capacity reached 3,700, giving all first- and second-year students the opportunity to live on campus.

Tornado strikes campus

An EF-2 tornado struck campus on June 16, 2014, significantly damaging three residence halls, Engineering Hall, the greenhouse, Pioneer Stadium, and Memorial Park. Demonstrating the Pioneer spirit, the university pulled together and readied campus for occupancy in the fall, ensuring the outstanding tradition of high quality and affordable education continues uninterrupted.
