Hohenheim commits itself to combat hunger and poverty and has been fighting against hunger for almost 200 years. At the time of its foundation, the institution’s obligation was oriented to the region – today the University of Hohenheim works on global hunger issues.

Foundation of the Institute for Foreign Agriculture

The number of foreign students, especially from developing countries, has always been relatively high, and already in 1961 the Institute for Foreign Agriculture was built up and headed by Professor Josef Gabriel Knoll, a plant production specialist and later by Professor Dr. Hans Ruthenberg, an agricultural economist. Both were pioneers in development oriented agricultural research.

Hohenheim gains University Status

The climate changes caused by the eruption of volcano Tambora in Indonesia in 1815 resulted in crop failures and famine in Southern Germany and other parts of Europe. To mitigate the famine in the subsequent years, the royal couple of Württemberg had founded the Agricultural Research and Teaching Institution at Hohenheim in 1818.

The DFG-funded Special Research Program (SFB) "Adapted Farming in West-Africa" (1985-1999) was the first large interdisciplinary project on development-oriented research in tropical agriculture coordinated in Hohenheim and the pioneer SFB of DFG implementing extensive, applied agricultural research in two developing African countries, namely Benin and Niger.

World Food Day

On October 16th Hohenheim hosted an international symposium on world food issues. With this academic event the Universität Hohenheim analogous to the other eight universities in Baden-Württemberg decided to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Heidelberger Akademie der Wissenschaften. The Universität Hohenheim arranged a conference on a topic specifically relevant to Hohenheim: Food Security. About 450 people, many of them students, scientific staff and professors joined the event which took place in lecture hall B1.

In 2010 (March 13-28) a study trip to Northern Vietnam was organised. Students Excursion to Costa Rica

The excursion from February 22nd to March 10th 2012 aimed to demonstrate and discuss at the example of Costa Rica issues related to tropical agriculture, processing and marketing of tropical crops, rural development, as well as research and teaching and the conservation of natural resources. Trans-SEC

Trans-SEC is supported by the funding initiative "Securing the Global Food Supply - GlobE" and embedded in the framework program "National Research Strategy BioEconomy 2030". Seven German research institutes, two CGIAR research centers from Kenya and USA as well as five Tanzanian institutes are involved in Trans-SEC. The specific objective of the collaborative research project Trans-SEC is to improve the food situation for the most-vulnerable rural poor population in Tanzania. Four working groups in Hohenheim are involved in the project: the Institute of Agricultural Engineering, the chair of Crop Water Stress Management in the Tropics and Subtropics, the Biological Chemistry and Nutrition group, and the Soil Chemistry and Pedology group. It is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and co-financed by the BMZ.

BiomassWeb is a ZEF (Center for Development Research of the University of Bonn) coordinated research programme focussing on “Improving food security in Africa through increased system productivity of biomass-based value webs” with the participation of numerous African research institutions, the Forschungzentrum Jülich and the University of Hohenheim.
