e-Waste Cartography

This timeline represents the lifespan of a laptop computer. It is a map in progress of the main involved agents and their relationships and positions around e-waste.

Despite of the striking data and the alarm raised from international forums and ecological organizations about e-waste, we are facing an ecological and socio-tecnical controversy whom we don't know many of their components: the current institutional responses are very limited (practically, they come down to apply the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)) and the possible everyday and innovative responses from citizenship remain invisible. In this map-timeline, we'll present the state of the art of documents, news and STS' literature that deal with this problem. This will let us know who are the involved agents and their relationships, discourses and practices around e-waste.

StEP Initiative

– an initiative of various UN organizations with the overall aim to solve the e-waste problem. Together with prominent members from industry, governments, international organizations, NGOs and academia actively participating in StEP, we initiate and facilitate approaches towards the sustainable handling of e-waste. In five Task Forces feasible, just and environmentally safe solutions for the e-waste problem are developed through analysis, planning and pilot-projects. StEP participates in E-WASTE ACADEMY: http://sites.google.com/site/ewasteacademy/ The E-waste Academy (EWA) is a pioneering concept in research and and aims to foster sustaining multi-stakeholder partnerships and collaboration on e-waste policy and management, looking at the e-waste issue in its entirety, rather than through the lens of a specific discipline.

UN RoHS Recomendations

Reducing occupational chemical exposure: Ambitious recommendations from UN meeting call for reducing chemical hazards throughout electronics life-cycle Far-reaching and ambitious recommendations laid out at a meeting of the United Nations Strategic Approach to International Chemical Management (SAICM) could significantly reduce occupational exposure to hazardous chemicals in the electronics industry – and do so at every stage of product life, from component design and manufacturing to recycling. If implemented, these recommendations would reduce health hazards for the thousands of workers employed at electronics production plants worldwide and begin to reduce environmental health hazards for those involved in electronics recycling, as well as for communities where these facilities are located and consumers who use these products.

PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE in Design

DIY-OPEN HARDWARE

Arduino is an open-source electronics prototyping platform based on flexible, easy-to-use hardware and software. It's intended for artists, designers, hobbyists, and anyone interested in creating interactive objects or environments. Arduino can sense the environment by receiving input from a variety of sensors and can affect its surroundings by controlling lights, motors, and other actuators. The microcontroller on the board is programmed using the Arduino programming language (based on Wiring) and the Arduino development environment (based on Processing). Arduino projects can be stand-alone or they can communicate with software running on a computer (e.g. Flash, Processing, MaxMSP).

I've BOUGHT my laptop in Apple's online store

183 million computers were sold worldwide in 2004 - 11.6 percent more than in 2003. According to Gartner Dataquest's statistics, in April 2002 the billionth personal computer was shipped. The second billion mark was supposedly reached in 2007. But how many computers are actually in use? According to a report by Forrester Research, there were over one billion PCs in use worldwide by the end of 2008. And with PC adoption in emerging markets growing fast, it is estimated that there will be more than two billion PCs in use by 2015, Forrester predicts. Therefore, whereas it took 27 years to reach the one billion mark, it will take only 7 to grow from 1 billion to 2 billion.

Save energy from your computer: CEH

Upgrade to more energy efficient products only when you need to buy new equipment. Consider the entire lifecycle of electronics before purchasing new equipment. 81% of the total energy your computer will use throughout its life is used during its manufacture—so extending the lifespan of your existing product is the real way to save energy.

Install LINUX

My BATTERY no longer hold a charge. I need to REPLACE it.

Most small electronics have rechargeable batteries, and after a certain point the batteries no longer hold a charge and need to be replaced. With some products, however, consumers can’t easily do that themselves and must take the product back to the manufacturer for a new battery. Many of Apple’s products are designed this way, including iPhones, iPods, laptops, iPads. Apple will replace your battery for a hefty fee but you must take or send it to them. (This is the point at which some people simply move on to a new product, especially for iPods.) Sometimes you can find a skilled geek who can also do this for you. Apple is also adept in getting its loyal customer base to constantly buy new gadgets. They keep releasing slightly different (and improved) versions of their iPods (classic, touch, nano, shuffle, etc).
