Central American Mission is Founded

On November 14, 1890, C.I. Scofield, with the support of three Christian businessmen friends who closely shared the vision, took a step of faith and officially formed the Central American Mission.

C.I. Scofield, Founder

Cyrus Ingerson Scofield was born near Detroit, Michigan on August 19, 1843, and went home to be with his Lord on July 24, 1921, some 30 years after the founding of the Central American Mission.

Judge D.H. Scott

David Howell Scott was born on May 17th, 1847, and died October 18, 1921. Scott passed away just three months after the death of C.I. Scofield, the mission’s founder and Scott’s co-laborer for more than three decades.

Ministry Begins in Honduras

On May 6, 1896, Mrs. and Mrs. A.E. Bishop and famly set sail for Honduras, even before officially applying to CAM. They were sure of their call.

Ministry Begins in Guatemala

Mrs. Bishop was adversely affected by the climate in Honduras, so the Bishops moved to Guatemala in 1899 to begin CAM's permanent work there. One of their first converts was a Quiche Indian woman who exclaimed, "I have come out of darkness into light. I am the slave of my blessed Lord until the day of my death."

Ministry Begins in El Salvador

As the work in Costa Rica, Honduras and Guatemala continued to strengthen and grow, El Salvador was established as CAM's next field, led by Robert and Belle Bender.

State of the Mission at the Turn of the Century

By the end of the first decade, five missionaries who had come eagerly to Central America with hope and love, died from disease or accidents

Ministry begins in Nicaragua

The work in Nicaragua was started by Clarence Wilbur, who died from yellow fever only 16 months after he entered the field. Mr. A.B. De Roos, who initially labored in Costa Rica, relocated to Nicaragua in 1900 to continue the work Wilbur Started. The first church was planted there in 1901.

Charter Member of the IFMA

The Central American Mission was one of 7 charter members of the newly founded Interdenominational Foreign Missions Association (IFMA), which became MissioNexus in 2012.

Thomas J. Jones

Thomas Jones began service as a member of the Executive Council in 1913, and was elected General Secretary on March 7, 1919 upon the resignation of C.I. Scofield.

Lewis Sperry Chafer

Chafer served as General Secretary for two years, leaving mission leadership in 1925 to focus on development of the Evangelical Theological College (known today as Dallas Theological Seminary), which he founded.

Dr. Hummel served as acting General Secretary of the Central American Mission beginning Feb 17, 1925, and was elected to the position April 2, 1929.

The mission's name is changed to CAM International

By the mid twentieth century, ministries of the mission were no longer limited to Central America. Reflecting expansion to Mexico, Spain, and North America, the Central American Mission became CAM International. This name change made official what the mission had already come to be known as for many years.

J. Ronald Blue

Dr. J. Ronald Blue was installed as President of CAM International on August 16, 1992 in the sanctuary of Scofield Memorial Church. Thirteen hundred people witnessed the historic ceremony in which Dr. Blue became the eighth President in CAM's 102-year history.

The Albania team's focus is in the capital city of Tirana with the primary goal of church planting.

Daniel Wicher

Dan and Sue have served with Camino Global since 1984, first in Mexico City as church planters and later as Mexico Field Director. In 2000, Dan succeeded Ron Blue and served 11 years as President of the mission.
