Creater of Zoetrope, the Zoetrope was a cylinder that had slits in the side. inside the drum was a drawing or picture that had stages of progression, so if you were to spin it and look through the slits it would look like it was moving.

Joseph Plateu Born

Creator of Phenakistoscope. The Phenakistoscope similar to the Zoetrope in that it imitates motion by using slots that hide the full disk and have a progressive drawing or picture that moves as it rotates.

The Thaumatrope is created

The Thaumatrope is a device that uses a piece of paper with a drawing on either side, this is attached to a piece of string on each side and is twisted to form an optical illusion, that makes it look animated.

Creator of the Praxinoscope. The Praxinoscope was the successor to the Zoetrope and worked in a similar way, its new features included an illumination lamp, and the ability to use less distorted slides, it also had a handle so you could use it easier.

Co-creator of the Kinetoscope. A Kinetoscope is a viewing device that has staggered images similar to the Zoetrope and Phenakistoscope, but has them hidden inside a box and are on a film-strip, attached to a set of cogs that are turned by the user to view the film/strip. Thomas also was well known for inventing the first long lasting light bulb.

The Flip Book

the flip book or Kinograph which was patented by john Barnes linnet in 1868. This is just effectively a notepad where a series of progressive images are drawn and then the pages are flicked to make it look animated.

Gerti the dinosaur was made by Winsor McCay, it was made using a traditional cel-animation technique, all the animation was drawn on pieces of paper by hand.

Earl Hurd was an animator known for the Silent Bobby Bumps animation and is well known for developing cel-animation.

Animator and film director. In his Uni years he did not have easy access to a camera so he painted and scratched his filmstock instead.

Creation of Rotroscoping

In 1915 two brothers Max and David Fleischer created Rotroscoping where you use an already recorded clip and animate over it so the animation looks more life like, this is more time consuming as it requires the original recording and then the animation on top.
