Taipei American School is Founded
Taipei American School opened its doors to eight students of three different nationalities in the basement of the Canadian Presbyterian Seminary on Chung Shan North Road in Taipei. At the time, tuition cost $50USD per semester.

TAS's First Graduating Class of 14 Students
In addition to the first graduating class completing their studies, a gymnasium was built. It was financed by community contributions. Enrollment grew to 1,000 students as more than 10,000 Americans were living in Taiwan.

TAS Enrollment Spike
TAS's peak enrollment was recorded at 2,750 students. After a gradual decline in the 1970s to below 1,000 students, this trend was reversed in the 1980s as Taiwan became a dynamic democracy full of economic opportunities.

The 1970s
My dad went to Taipei American School in the 1970's and had the time of his life. As a kid he shot tons of really great Super 8 stuff. He gave me two hours of footage to condense into a video to show at his high school reunion. Music used: Harry Nilsson, The Strangles, Steppenwolf, Dick Dale, Jonathan Richman and Cat Stevens.

The PTA has long supported TAS excellence by holding wonderful events such as the International Food Festival and Spring Fair throughout the years.

Hope N.F. Phillips Scholarship Begins
Upon her retirement in 2001, Hope N.F. Phillips started a scholarship to offer temporary tuition support to help families who would otherwise have to leave TAS. Hope was a beloved English Teacher of 46 years at TAS.
