Gallipolis Journal, Women's Edition
The Thursday Club sponsored a fundraising event to help fund and establish Gallia County’s first public library. One of their efforts involved commissioning the Gallipolis Journal to print a special ‘Women’s Edition’ of the newspaper. During the public library fundraiser, the Women’s Edition of the newspaper was auctioned to George House for $100. Mr. House later donated the silk newspaper back to the library, where it is still housed today. A total of $800 dollars were raised during this auction as well as large donations of books from the supporter’s own collections.

The Lupton Building
Through the Thursday Club’s efforts, the first public library in Gallipolis was opened on the 2nd floor of the Lupton building. Addie Vanden, a founding member of the Thursday Club, became the first librarian. Due to the support of both the Thursday Club and generous donors, the library collection included a total of 996 books by the time it first opened its doors to the public.
