Microcomputers and the emergence of CALL
With the advent of microcomputers, language teachers started creating simple drill and practice programs.The term CALL (computer assisted language learning) emerged among other terms such as CELL, CASLA, and TELL but the term CALL remains and is being used today. 1980s are also the beginning of what we call today "The Internet". It was a text-based internet and lacked imagery. Learners were able to interact with each other in the same virtual rooms, similar to today's "Zoom". Users of the internet were passive learners and only the professionals could create content. This would be the case until the Web 2.0 emerges.
