The Mainframe-based PLATO

It was created in the 1960s and became more widespread by the 1970s. The lessons were programmed. The initial language teaching programs were basic drills but as the time passed, audio and graphics were implemented.

This instruction was around 1960s and 1970s. The emphasis was on the machine and it was a behavioristic approach to learning.

Microcomputers and the emergence of CALL

With the advent of microcomputers, language teachers started creating simple drill and practice programs.The term CALL (computer assisted language learning) emerged among other terms such as CELL, CASLA, and TELL but the term CALL remains and is being used today. 1980s are also the beginning of what we call today "The Internet". It was a text-based internet and lacked imagery. Learners were able to interact with each other in the same virtual rooms, similar to today's "Zoom". Users of the internet were passive learners and only the professionals could create content. This would be the case until the Web 2.0 emerges.

The Apple Macintosh computer is introduced.

Laptops

Laptops are introduced and used in schools as teaching tools.

World Wide Web

The World Wide Web was founded, enabling web searches and collaborative working. Computer mediated communication (CMC), a subset of CALL, became more common but CALL remained to be popular. CD-ROMs and smartboards became widespread in schools and schools opened up computer labs.

Web 2.0 emerges

The emergence of the Web 2.0 made it possible for teachers and learners to create content. As a result, the term TELL (technology-enchanced language learning) reemerged. Terms with reference to 'mobile' also became more common (MALL - mobile assisted language learning).

Social Media

Websites, or social media sites such as Facebook, MySpace, Tumblr, Youtube are founded. People are now sharing the moments of their lives. Later on, with the advent of smartphones, they will share a lot more on the social media. Thanks to these sites, learning groups, videos and blogs are created and shared by people all around the world.
