Cairnpapple - four additional graves

Four additional graves are created outside the cairn for extended inhumations, grouped together within the Henge area to the east. Undated, but possibly Early Iron Age within the first couple of centuries A.D.3 They are believed to be Christian graves.

Romans record the site as a 'Central Sanctuary'

The Romans when they came by on a reconnaissance trip in the early Christian era recorded the ancient cairn of Cairnpapple as “media nemeton”, meaning “central sanctuary” of the highest order of Druids. Renowned as a wisdom school, Cairnpapple was one of Scotland’s foremost centres for learning.

Archaeological excavation

In 1947-8 archaeological excavations are undertaken by Professor Stuart Piggott, of the University of Edinburgh.

Site taken into state care & erection of concrete dome

In 1948 the site is taken into state care after the excavations. Major works are carried out to protect the property, including erection of a concrete dome over two of the Bronze-Age burials.

Police wireless mast is erected

In the late 1950s a Police wireless mast is erected a short distance to the SW of the site.

The primary cairn, containing two cist-burials, one an inhumation with a food-vessel, and the other a cremation.
