Abolishing Discrimination in Sorority Life at UW-Madison
While the University of Wisconsin-Madison turned a blind eye to the discriminatory practices in Greek organizations on campus in the 60s, the Human Right’s Committee took initiative to fight for equity.
In 1964, the Human Rights Committee mobilized a set of anti-discriminatory certificates in attempt to abolish the discriminatory barriers upheld in Greek life on campus. Their efforts were met with conflict when one sorority on campus refused to adopt the Committee’s documents.;xNLx;;xNLx;The fight to remove racial discrimination from sororities has not ended, even after 58 years. In 2021, UW continues to struggle with valuing inclusivity and advocating for diversity within Greek life.;xNLx;
