Microsoft Windows' first update, version 1.0, was released on 20 November 1985. Windows 1.0 was not a complete operating system, but rather an "operating environment" that extended MS-DOS, and shared the latter's inherent flaws.
On December 9, 1987, version 2.0 from Microsoft Windows (2.01 and 2.03 internally) was released and proved much more successful than its predecessor. The inclusion of Windows 2.0 as a "runtime version" with Microsoft's new graphical apps, Excel and Word for Windows was very successful.
Windows 3.0, published in May 1990, enhanced native applications capabilities.
When it was launched on 24 August, 1995, Microsoft Marketing adopted Windows 95 as the Chicago product name.
Windows 98 was released by Microsoft on 25 June 1998, (code-named Memphis).
Microsoft launched its Windows 98 substitute in September 2000, Windows Me, which is short for "Millennium Edition."
Windows XP was launched on 25 October 2001 (codenamed "Whistler"). To replace an outdated Windows 9x branch, Windows XP uses the Windows NT 5.1 kernel that marks a Windows NT core entry into the user market.
In July 2005, a Windows XP Service Pack, Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs, was release by Microsoft (WinFLP).
On 30 November 2006, Windows Vista was made available to business customers, followed by consumer versions on 30 January 2007.
Windows 7 was launched on 22 July 2009 and generally made available on 22 October 2009. It was previously known by the codenames Blackcomb and Vienna.
The public published Windows 8 by Microsoft on 26 October 2012. Windows 8 has a new user interface that allows Windows users to use touchscreens more easily.
The latest Microsoft Windows operating system update is Windows 10. It was launched on 29 July 2015, unveiled on 30 September 2014.
