Massachusetts Act of 1642
This act required parents to teach their children the principils of religion and the capital laws of the commonwealth.

Old Delunder Satan Act
During this time, the colonies began to favor formal schooling. This act required towns of fifty or more families to hire a schoolmaster who would teach the children to read and write. Furthermore, towns with a hundred or more families were required to hire a grammar master who would prepare the children for college.

Specific Educational Provisions
Thomas Jefferson, along with many others,believed that education should be controlled by the government. By 1791, seven of the fourteen states had specific provisions regarding education. School Attendance Law
Free, public education was available for all American children by the end of the 19th century. As a result, Massachutes passed the first school attendance law in 1852. In 1853, New York followed in Massachutes footsteps and also passed an attendance law.

In 1925, the Supreme Court ruled that parents could choose whether to send their child to a public school, free of religious basis, or a private school.

The Supreme Court ruled to end segregation in the public school system.

Expanding Educational Opportunities

Title IX
(Click more to view video) Title IX prohibites discrimination based on gender, in schools that recieve federal funding. All students, boys and girls, are to recieve equal educational opportunities.

Segregation Comes to an end
(Click more to view video) Despite the passing of Brown v. Board of Education in 1954, many southern politicians failed to comply with the law. It wasn't until 1980 that segregation in the southern states ended.
