Timeline of Gondor

This is a timeline of all the dates related to Gondor! There will be some added fanon of my own to flesh out each of the reigns of the kings and Stewards.;xNLx;;xNLx;The BC dates are simply the years until the beginning of the third age, so the second age in other words. ;xNLx;;xNLx;I will try to include any obscure facts in here too, so that the kings and how Gondor has changed over the years becomes more apparent. All the points are clickable for more information.

Meneldil takes guardianship of Gondor

Isildur plants the white tree in Minas Anor before going north back to Arnor. Before he leaves he gives the charge of Gondor to Meneldil, Anarion's eldest surviving son. Isildur does not make it to Arnor, dying in a catastrophic attack at the Gladden Fields with all his sons but Valandil, still a boy in Rivendell. The ring is lost in the Anduin.

0007 BC-02-01 00:00:00

Siege on Mordor, Start of the Third Age

With first the Battle of the Dagorlad and then the Siege of Barad-dur, the Last Alliance spends seven years fighting within Mordor. Anarion is slain in 3440 (0001 BC) but a year later Sauron is slain by Isildur, whereupon he took up the ring as weregild for his dead brother and Father (Elendil having fallen in that last fight.)

0010-01-25 21:27:59

Meneldil becomes King of Gondor

Valandil, Isildur's surviving son, takes only the kingship of Arnor, thereby dividing the two countries into separate lineages and cultures for millenia. Not much is known about his reign other than that a Gondorian scholar wrote the Ondonóre Nómesseron Minaþurie ("Enquiry into the Place-names of Gondor") during it.

0011 BC-04-01 00:00:00

Formation of the Last Alliance

Isildur and Elendil treat with the elven king Gil Galad and they form an alliance against Sauron. They march east to war the following year.

0012 BC-01-01 00:00:00

Sauron Attacks Gondor

Mordor regains the strength it needs for open war and manages to take Minas Ithil. The White Tree there is burned. But Isildur escapes the city by fleeing to the Anduin and returning to Elendil in the north with a seedling. Embattled, Anarion remains and defends both Minas Anor and Osgiliath from invasion.

0121 BC-11-01 00:00:00

Gondor and Arnor Founded

With their remaining fleet divided, Elendil's ships arrived at Lindon in the North whilst Anarion and Isildur landed up the river Anduin in the south. Elendil founded the Kingdom of Arnor whilst his sons founded the kingdom of Gondor.

0121 BC-12-01 00:00:00

Sauron returns to Mordor

After the destruction of Numenor, Sauron's spirit fled back to Mordor.

0158-01-25 21:27:59

Cemendur corronated

Death of King Meneldil, his son is crowned the fourth king of Gondor. Little is known about his reign, only that it was a peaceful one.

0238-01-25 21:27:59

Eärendil corronated

Death of King Cemendur, his son is crowned the fifth king of Gondor. Even less is known of his reign.

0324-01-25 21:27:59

Anardil corronated

Death of Eärendil. His son is crowned sixth king of Gondor. Anardil's reign over Gondor was uneventful. He is remembered as the last of Gondor's kings to dwell exclusively in the capital of Osgiliath. Anardil's son, Ostoher, was to set the precedent of the kings spending the summer at Minas Anor, the citadel later known as Minas Tirith.

0411-01-25 21:27:59

Ostoher corronated

Death of Anardil. His son is crowned seventh king of Gondor. In T.A. 420, Ostoher rebuilt and enlarged Minas Anor. Upon completion, he made Minas Anor his summer residence, which became the tradition of his successors.

0490-01-25 21:27:59

First invasion by the Easterlings

Since Ostoher had become an old man, his son Tarostar worked to defeat this threat. After his victory in T.A. 500 (eight years after he had succeeded his father) Tarostar assumed the name Rómendacil, "East-victor".

0492-01-25 21:27:59

Tarostar (Romendacil) corronated

Death of Ostoher, his son is crowned the eighth king of Gondor. After the first assault of the Easterlings, Tarostar ordered that the "Tradition of Isildur" (the secret that Elendil's remains were kept within Amon Anwar, the mid point of the kingdom) be set down in a sealed scroll to be delivered to the King's heir before his crowning by a trusted ally. Thus was the office of the Stewardship born.

0541-01-25 21:27:59

Easterlings Attack, Romendacil Slain

Death of Romendacil, Turambar crowned the tenth king of Gondor. New hordes assailed Gondor and Rómendacil died in renewed battle. Turambar sought vengeance for his father's death, and succeeded brilliantly. Not only did he destroy the horde, he continued his conquest into the lands of the Easterlings themselves, winning new territory in Rhûn for Gondor. Because Turambar was young when he took the throne his rule lasted longer than a century. His was the longest reign of Gondor since that of his ancestor Meneldil.

0667-06-14 11:57:15

Atanatar I corronated

Death of Turambar, Atanatar crowned the eleventh king of Gondor. In comparison to his father's reign, Atanatar's was uneventful.

0748-06-14 11:57:15

Siriondil corronated

Death of Atanatar I, his son becomes the twelth king of Gondor. Siriondil's reign, like his father's, was uneventful.

0830-06-14 11:57:15

Tarannon Falastur corronated

Death of Siriondil, his son is crowned the thirteenth king of Gondor. Tarannon had been captain of the hosts (the royal fleet) before his coronation. During his reign he instigated conquering wars by way of ships far down the southern coastline and greatly expanded Gondor's borders into Harondor. Thereby he became known as the first of four 'ship-kings', a line defined by expansionism. However, Tarannon was remembered also for his fractuous relationship with his wife. Beruthiel was a black numenorean, wedded during his conquering days, and she found no love for him nor for Gondor. She was said to have used cats to spy upon people and eventually Tarannon grew such hatred for her that he put her in a boat and cast her adrift into the sea. From then on the tale of Beruthiel has been held as a reminder of the dishonour to be found in a marriage without love.

0861-06-14 11:57:15

Division of Arnor

A dispute over the line of succession in Arnor breaks that country into three, Arthedain ruled by the eldest and Rhudaur and Cardolan by the two younger. The three countries war between each other for many generations after.

0913-06-14 11:57:15

Eärnil I corronated

Death of Tarannon Falastur, childless and therefore his nephew, son of his brother Tarciryan, is crowned the thirteenth king of Gondor and second ship-king. Eärnil I continued his uncle's expansionist maritime policy by constructing a great navy and repairing the ancient havens of Pelargir, and then capturing the Haven of Umbar in T.A. 933.

0933-06-14 11:57:15

Umbar conquered for Gondor

King Eärnil I captured Umbar in a surprise attack after a siege by sea and land, although this was "at great cost." It became a great harbour and fortress of the power of Gondor. Afterwards many lords of the Black Númenóreans retreated into Harad and began ruling the Haradrim.

0936-06-14 11:57:15

Ciryandil corronated

Eärnil I is lost at sea, his son is crowned the fourteenth King of Gondor and the third Ship-King. Much of Ciryandil's reign was taken up with the defense of Umbar against the Haradrim, lead against them by black numenorean lords.

1000-06-14 11:57:15

The Istari appear in Middle Earth

1015-06-14 11:57:15

Hyarmendacil I (Ciryaher) corronated

Ciryandil is slain in the Haradwaith during a siege upon Umbar by Haradrim, lead by Black Numenoreans. Despite investing and besieging the fortress of Umbar for 35 years, they failed to take it, as its supply was easily maintained because of the sea-power of Gondor.

1050-08-19 17:54:23

Harad conquered, Sauron comes to Dol Guldur.

King Ciryaher openly declares war on and conquers the men of Harad who acknowledge the overlordship of Gondor. Harondor becomes a province of Gondor. After this victory he took the name Hyarmendacil, meaning "South-victor". During this time a shadow fell over the Greenwood in the north and it was thereafter called Mirkwood. Sauron's spirit also then encourages some Easterlings to move into Rhovanion, up to the vales of the Anduin. Hyarmendacil's reign brought Gondor to its greatest extent and power. For the rest of his one hundred and thirty-four year reign Gondor was at peace; the passes of Mordor were well guarded, and no one dared contest his power.

1100-08-19 17:54:23

Istari notice the Shadow in Dol Guldur

The Wise (the Istari and the chief Eldar) discover that an evil power has made a stronghold at Dol Guldur. It is thought to be one of the Nazgûl.

1149-08-19 17:54:23

Atanatar II Alcarin corronated

Death of Hyarmendacil, his son is crowned the sixteenth king of Gondor. End of the ship-kings. Atanatar lived in ease and splendour, such that people said "precious stones are pebbles in Gondor for children to play with." The King loved luxury and it was during his reign that the original Crown of Gondor was replaced by a jeweled helm. However, due to the King's indolence nothing was done to maintain the power that his ancestors had built and the watch upon Mordor was neglected.

1226-08-19 17:54:23

Narmacil I corronated

Death of Atanatar, his son is crowned the seventeenth king of Gondor. However, Narmacil had little desire to rule.

1240-08-19 17:54:23

Minalcar appointed Carma-cundo

King Narmacil I of Gondor, to rid himself of his cares, appoints his nephew Minalcar (lated known as Rómendacil II) Regent of Gondor. Minalcar rules as Regent, in the name of King and proves to be a vigorous Regent. He allies with the Northmen and befriends King Vidugavia.

1248-01-28 19:55:54

Easterlings Defeated

As Regent, Minalcar's main concern was the state of the North. In the wide lands beyond the Anduin the Northmen had multiplied. These people had been shown favour by the Kings in the past but when, in the days of Narmacil I, the Easterlings resumed their attacks it was discovered that not all of the Northmen adhered to Gondor. To secure the region, in T.A. 1248 Minalcar led a great force, aided by King Vidugavia, that defeated a large Easterling army between Rhovanion and the Sea of Rhûn, and even destroyed their encampments east of the Sea. Minalcar then took the name Rómendacil or "East-victor". He sent his son Valacar in T.A. 1250 to live with Vidugavia as Gondor's ambassador in order to understand the language, manners and policies of the Northmen. About this time, the western shores of the Anduin are fortified and the pillars of the Argonath are erected at the entrance to Nen Hithoel.

1294-01-28 19:55:54

Calmacil corronated

Death of Narmacil without children, his brother is crowned eighteenth king of Gondor. However, as Calmacil was an old man by that, his son Minalcar retained the title of regent.

1300-01-28 19:55:54

Evil begins to multiply

Orcs increase in the Misty Mountains and attack the dwarves. The Nazgul return and the chief of them comes north to Angmar.

1304-01-28 19:55:54

Romendacil II (Minalcar) corronated

Death of Calmacil, his son is crowned the nineteenth king of Gondor, after a prosperous regency he enjoyed a peaceful and uneventful Kingship.

1366-01-28 19:55:54

Valacar corronated

Death of Romendacil, his son is crowned the twentieth king of Gondor. During his ambassadorship to the Northmen, Valacar had become so enamoured of the people and lands of the North that he wedded Vidugavia's daughter, Vidumavi. Rómendacil gave his consent to this marriage. Valacar and Vidumavi continued to live in the north and produced a son named Vinitharya (later Eldacar), after the fashion of Vidumavi's people. Rómendacil finally recalled his son to Gondor in 1260; when Valacar arrived he brought his family as well as a household of noble men and women from the North. The news that the heir to the throne had married a woman of a lesser and alien race did not sit well with the high men of Gondor. Vidumavi was short-lived according to the measure of the Dúnedain and they feared that her descendants would prove likewise, thus diminishing the majesty of Gondor's royalty. These tumults haunted Valacar's kingship.

1409-01-28 19:55:54

War of Angmar

The Witch-king launches a massive assault upon Arnor, circling around the Dúnedain defences to invade Cardolan from the south. Causing huge destruction, the host of Angmar marched north to Amon Sûl. The great watchtower was taken and destroyed, although its palantír was saved and brought to Fornost. In this war both Arveleg and the last Prince of Cardolan perished. The remaining Dúnedain of Rhudaur were slain or driven west, while those of Cardolan held out only in Tyrn Gorthad and the Old Forest. Fornost meanwhile was beset by the armies of Angmar, but Cirdan brought reinforcements out of Lindon, enabling the young king Araphor to repel his foes from the North Downs. Arnor had been weakened hugely but the Witch-king was unable to press home his advantage because, at this point, the Elves unleashed their remaining strength upon Angmar. Elrond persuaded King Amroth to send a force of Galadhrim over the High Pass to Rivendell. Together with their kinsfolk of Lindon, they dealt such a blow to Angmar that it was left in a weakened state for centuries. Rhudaur however was taken by Angmar and the indegenous people, dubbed 'hill-men', retook it with Angmar as overlord.

1432-01-28 19:55:54

Eldacar's corronation sparks the Kinstrife, Castimir rules Gondor

Death of Valacar, his son is crowned the twenty-first king of Gondor. As Valacar grew old rebellion had smouldered in the southern fiefs of Gondor since many refused to accept Eldacar as their upcoming lord due to his percieved 'lesser lineage'. When Eldacar succeeded his father in T.A. 1432 full civil war erupted, called the Kin-strife.

1437-01-28 19:55:54

Castamir usurps the throne

Castamir was the grandson of Calimetar, brother to King Romendacil, and so claimed the kingship over Eldacar on account of his percieved 'lesser lineage'. He lead the rebellion against him and as Captain of Ships in Pelargir at the time, he used resources and the loyalty of Pelargir and Umbar to attack Osgiliath. The great house of parliment and seat of the king, the Dome of Stars, set in the centre of the great bridge of Osgiliath, was ruined and the Palantir it held was lost to the river Anduin in the siege. Castamir also slew Eldacar's son and heir, Ornendil, and forced Eldacar to flee to Rhovanion. However, Castamir's cruelty shook the foundations of the loyalty many had for him and his kingship was marked by his haughty and ungenerous nature.

1447-09-06 01:36:56

Eldacar reclaims the throne, Harondor and Umbar cede from Gondor

Eldacar gathered together his kinsfold in Rhovanion, those Northmen who had served Gondor, and many of the Dúnedain from the northern parts of Gondor. After ten years of exile Eldacar led a great army to reclaim his Kingship. His forces were augmented by the people of Calenardhon, Anórien, and Ithilien as they rebelled against the cruelty and lack of generosity of Castamir, and by Castamir's disdain for the land with his plan to remove the seat of the King to Pelargir. The greatest clash during Eldacar's return took place at the Crossings of Erui in Lebennin. Although Eldacar himself avenged his son Ornendil by slaying Castamir, the sons of the Usurper escaped from the battle and held out at Pelargir. Gathering the remainder of their forces these sons then sailed to Umbar which then became a refuge for all enemies of the King and ceded from Gondor a year later. The independent lordship of Umbar would remain at war with Gondor for generations, a constant threat to its coastlines and sea traffic.

1490-09-06 01:36:56

Aldamir corronated

Death of Eldacar, his son is corronated the twenty third King of Gondor.

1540-09-06 01:36:56

Harad and Umbar attack, Aldamir Slain, Vinyarion corronated

Allied with Umbar and the sons of Castamir, newly ceded Harad made open war against Gondor. Aldamir was slain and his son was crowned the twenty-fourth king of Gondor.

1551-09-06 01:36:56

Harad defeated but not reclaimed

In vengeance for his father's death, Vinyarion lead Gondor's armies agains Harad until the region was subdued. He took the name Hyarmendacil II in celebration, but Gondor did not manage to reclaim the province.

1621-09-06 01:36:56

Minardil corronated

Death of Vinyarion (Hyarmendacil II), his son is crowned twenty-fifth King of Gondor. In response to his father's death, Minardil began outfitting a fleet to reduce the Haven of Umbar. Minardil's chosen steward was Húrin of Emyn Arnen, a dunadain known for his wisdom and dedication.

1634-08-21 12:23:07

Pelargir beseiged, Minardil assassinated, Telemnar corronated

Minardil visited Pelargir, thinking that there was no peril. He was wrong, for spies informed Castamir's great-grandsons Angamaitë and Sangahyando of the King's presence in the city. Quickly they launched a great raid in which Minardil was slain, Pelargir ravaged, and great wealth of treasure was stolen.

1635-08-21 12:23:07

The Great Plague, Death of King Telemnar, Tarondor corronated

The Great Plague began in the east beyond Mordor and hit Rhûn and Rhovanion, and after it had passed, more than half the folk of the Kingdom of Rhovanion had been killed. The Plague also hit the enemies of Gondor, otherwise they could overwhelm the weakened kingdom easily, but this didn't affect Sauron, who could wait. It first reached Gondor in T.A. 1636. The Plague was devastating in Gondor; Osgiliath was especially hit hard, suffering the highest casualties outside of Rhovanion. Many fled the city and removed to Ithilien and Anórien, and Minas Anor became the King's seat. The casualties were so high that the fortresses guarding Mordor were abandoned as the troops were recalled. The new king, Telemnar was killed together with his kin, followed by the White Tree of Gondor, as well as many others of the Dúnedain; two centuries after the Kin-strife, this further destroyed the people of Gondor. In the chaos of the King's death, as well as all his closest family, Steward Húrin laboured greatly and fearlessly to maintain order and manage the plague's damage, as well as ensure the Kingship was passed to Telemnar's nephew, Tarondor. He was greatly honoured for this service.

1640-01-02 11:49:06

House Húrin becomes the House of the Stewards, King Tarondor removes to Minas Anor and the watch on Mordor is fully abandoned.

In recognition of Húrin's exemplary service during the Plague, and recognising how key his work had been in the guarding of Gondor, Minardil's heirs opted to select their own Stewards from only Húrin's sons and descendants; thus Stewardship was connected to the House of Húrin and that family cultivated a very unique code and culture to be suitable for such a role.

1798-01-02 11:49:06

Telumehtar corronated

Death of Tarondor, his son is crowned twenty-seventh king of Gondor. In the early years of Telumehtar's reign over Gondor, his country's coasts were still prey to assaults from the Corsairs of Umbar even as far as the Anfalas, under the command of the descendants of Castamir.

1810-09-02 02:09:26

Telumehtar retakes Umbar

Recalling the assasination of his father and rankled by the insolence of the Corsairs, Telumehtar resolved to put an end to these attacks. He marshalled an assault of his own. In a great victory, the Corsairs were driven out of Umbar, which was captured for Gondor and the last descendants of Castamir were allegedly killed. Telumehtar added the epithet Umbardacil, "Victor over Umbar", to his name to commemorate his victory. The Haven of Umbar was held by Gondor throughout Telumehtar's reign.

1850-06-27 05:33:38

Narmacil II corronated

Death of Telumehtar, his son is crowned the twenty-eighth king of Gondor.

1851-06-27 05:33:38

Attack of the Wainriders, Second Angmar War.

A new confederacy of many peoples called the Wainriders appeared from the East. Encouraged by emissaries from Sauron they suddenly assaulted Gondor. Araval, King of Arthedain, in coalition with the Elves of Lindon and Rivendell, went to battle with the forces of Angmar and returned victorious. After this victory, Araval attempted to re-occupy Cardolan, but the "evil wights" (likely referring to the Barrow-wights) terrified anyone who attempted to dwell there.

1856-06-27 05:33:38

The Wainrider/Balchoth Wars begin, Telumehtar slain, Calimehtar corronated, Ringwraiths return to Mordor.

Rhovanion is invaded by a tribe of Easterlings known as the Wainriders and Balchoths. The soldiers of the Kingdom of Rhovanion, together with the armies of Gondor, met the Wainriders at the Battle of the Plains. It is a disaster. Narmacil II is killed and King of the Northmen, Marhari dies leading the rearguard, leaving Marhwini his son. Much of the Kingdom of Rhovanion is lost and its people are enslaved. Some Northmen escape, and Marhwini leads one band of refugees to the west. The refugees wander until they reached the untamed land between the eastern bank of the River Anduin and the western edge of Mirkwood Forest. Settling there in the Vales of Anduin, the refugees would eventually become the Éothéod, the ancestors of the mighty Riders of Rohan.

1899-06-22 13:32:14

Northmen revolt, Wainriders driven back east

Calimehtar was preparing for war when messengers came to him from Marhwini warning him of plans by the Wainriders to raid Calenardhon across the Undeeps. However, the messengers also informed Calimehtar that a revolt of those enslaved after the Battle of the Plains was being prepared and would erupt should the Wainriders become involved in war. As quickly as he could Calimehtar led an army north from Ithilien, making sure that the enemy knew of his movements. Gathering all of their available strength, the Wainriders came down to meet him and the King gave way before them, drawing them away from their homes. A battle developed upon the Dagorlad which seemed in doubt until upon the flank and rear of the Wainriders fell Calimehtar's horsemen, joined with a great éored lead by Marhwini, driving them back east. Calimehtar's and Marhwini's victory was overwhelming and Gondor enjoyed a respite from war for 45 years.
