Educational Technology Timeline
The evolution of technology throughout history consist of six interrelated strands. Strand one pertains to Toffler's wave theory. The other strands consist of different aspects, education, work, society/ culture, technology and politics. All of these strands are intertwined with each other and as the world professes these strands also are effected and change.

First Wave: Agricultural Age
During the Agricultural Age it was important for families to stay and live together due to the need for survival. Farming, hunting and gathering were vital to everyday living.

Second Wave: Industrial Age
During the second wave, Industrial Age, more and more factories opened and more people left their homes to work in the factories.

AT&T
Alexander Graham Bell, founder of the telephone company that would eventually become American Telephone and Telegraph. In the late 1800's AT&T was the only telephone provider. In 1892, AT&T opened the first line between New York and Philadelphia, which was the first long distance line. In 1915 the first intercontinental system opened, allowing calls across the country. AT&T was responsible for the first live TV program, the transister in 1947 which evolved to the personal computer.

Edison Light Company
Thomas Edison opened the first light company.

Westinghouse Electric Company
George Westinghouse created the Westinghoouse Electric Company in 1884. Westinghouse was different from Edison; Westinghouse was a proponent for alternating current which allows air flow to go either direction instead of just one. Westinghouse built execution chairs. He also built three large generataors that helped give electricity to Niagara Falls an example of hydro-electric power. In 1905 Westinghouse created the first locomotive to run on AC power. Westinghouse is also responsible in creating air-filled shock absorbers.

General Electric
Thomas Edison merges all of his businesses into one, General Electric. General Electric was responsible for not only giving electricity, but for also inventing household appliances like the toaster and the vaacum. General Electric was also responsible for the phonograph and in 1906 was responsible for the first radio broadcast.

Nordstrom
In 1901 John W. Nordstrom and Carl Wallin open a shoe store in Seattle called Wallin and Nordstrom. Eventually when John W. Nordstrom's son's take over the business it is called Nordstrom's and they begin selling women's clothing too.

President McKinley Assassinated
President McKinley was shot on September 6, 1901. Everyone thought that he was going to live even though they could not get one of the bullets out; however, on September 14, 1901 he died of complications. McKinley's Vice President Theodore Roosevelt assumed presidency.

Most everyone was skeptical that the polygraph could predict if someone was telling a lie, but it was the beginning of opening a new realm of what might be possible.

Ford Motor Company
Henry Ford launched his first company in Detroit in 1903. In October of 1908, the first Model T car came off the assembly line cotsting $950.00. Due to the popularity of the cars he was able to open his first moving assembly line in 1914 in Highland Park Michigan. It could produce a car every 93 minutes.

Safeway Stores
Safeway grocery stores originally consisted of two independent grocery stores, Skaggs Cash Stores and Sam Seelig Company. Marios Skaggs purchased his father's stores and then later when he merged his stores with the Seelig Co. they called the stores Safeway Grocery.

John Wegman worked for his parents when they opened a food stand in New York. Later he opened the Rochester Fruit and Vegtable Company. Later his bother decided to get involved and they opened another grocery store and they began to broaden the items they sold and eventually the name changed to Wegmans Food Market.

In 1921 L.S. Lowe opened a hardware store in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina and upon his death his son's took over the family business. During World War II his the wives operated the business while the men served their country. Whe the son's came back they were able to open a second store and due to the boom in the economy quickly they opened a third.
