Introduction to Film and Radio

In the 1920s, a major improvement to educational learning was the implementation of film and radio. However, film seemed to work better when conflicting times effected radio. As well as not every educational session matched up for radio, forcing it be the more undesired out of the two.

Division of Visual Instruction

The NEA established the division and it was the 1st major progressive movement for Instructional technology. This includes slides, motion pictures, and improvement of instruction.

Mechanical Teaching Machine

Sydney Pressey invented this machine that acted like typewriter. It was used to answer multiple choice questions in order to get direct results. However, funding dropped during The Great Depression.

Film was a more prominent thing used in the classroom for learning. The 30s also made way for Instructional Radio, forming the NACRE (National Advisory Council on Radio in Education), FCC (Federal Communications Commission), and NCER (National Committee on Education by Radio).

Military Technology

During World War 2, the military gets their eyes on instructional film. They used film in the military for training purposes. By having the soldiers watch these instructional videos it allows for them to be better prepared for future instances.

The first electronic computer was created by John Vincent Atanasoff during this time. Also educational technology was expanding in the US.

US Office of Education

The US Office of Education, under the company Coronet, through the years of 1941 to 1945 was able to create: 457 sounds motion films, 432 silent films, and 457 instruction manuals.

The Memex

Vannevar Bush published "As We May Think". Also created the Memex (aka Hypertext) which can store all books, records, and communications. It is mechanized tp have exceeding speed and flexibility, allowing for a better response time.

Edger Dale published a textbook on Audio Visual methods in teaching. With that he introduced us to his helpful tool, "The Cone of Experience". This tool shows the progression of experiences from the most concrete at the bottom to the most abstract at the top.

Created by Bell Labs, the transistor, was created to eliminate inefficient cumbersome mechanical relay.

PDP1 computer

The computer to use the transistor technology appeared in the early 50s. The PDP1 computer had a memory of 9 kilobits and was the computer used for the first video game, Space Wars.

Blooms Taxonomy is a set of three hierarchical models used to classify educational learning objectives into levels of specificity. Created by Benjamin Bloom who was a educational psychologist who believed in the mystery approach of learning.

Constructivism

Constructivism was developed by Lev Vygotsky. He suggested that, every function in the child's cultural development appears twice. First, the social level and, later, the individual level. It is important theory for teaching and learning developed in the late 70s.

Advancement of Computers

During the 80s, at least one computer was placed in each educational room. Also new products were introduced to the world. For example, CD, video advancement in both education and entertainment, headphones, and audiotapes. Most importantly the world was introduced to Powerpoint, which allowed teaching in the classroom to completely shift to media learning.

Entering into the 90s, we enter the ages of computer and digital world. A major aspect of this time period was the creation of the world wide web (www.), also know as the Internet. This platform allowed for an individual to have any public information in the palm of their hands in mere seconds, changing the way we learn and develop.
