Old civilazations, Aztecs, Mayans and Incas

The Aztecs, the Mayans and the Incas were three old civilizations established in Central and South America. They were rich empires. They were conquered by the Spanish conquerors and their empires disappeared.

Modern Age

The Middle Ages ended with the discovery of the Americas in 1492. The next period is called the Modern Age. It was a time of discovery when peopl'es ideas about the world changed. Explorers discovered new lands and routes around the world. The period lasted almost 300 years and ended with the French Revolution in 1789.

America's discovering

A navigator called Cristopher Columbus in 1492 was sent to the East by the Spanish Catholic Kings but instead of that he found a new route to the Americas. He never knew that he reached America, he thought that was Asia. Their ships were "La Pinta", "La Niña" and the "Santa María".

Society

During the Modern Age, the society was divided into two groups: the priveleged (the king, the nobility and the clergy) and the non priveleged (farmers, traders, artisans...)

This war started in 1640 in Catalonia and ended in 1652 in Barcelona.

Spanish War of Succession

Between 1701 and 1714 there was a dispute between two candidates for the Spanish throne.

The Golden Age

The Golden Age was a tme when many great works of art and literature were produced. Famous painters of this age were Velázquez and Murillo.

The Industrial Revolution

The Industrial Revolution began in the second half of the 18th century. The first industrial country in the world was the United Kingdom, followed later by France,Germany, the United States and the other countries. The years were 1780-1850.

Contemporary Age

We live in the Contemporary Age. This period of history began in 1789 with the French Revolution and continues to the present day. Life has changed a lot in these two hundred years. Thanks to social changes and progress in technology, medicine and science, we live longer and have better lives than our ancestors.

The French Revolution

There was a serious economic crisis in France. During this crisis, the unpriviledged classes demanded political and social reforms. Finally, on 14th July 1789, the common people filled the streets of Paris and took control of the Bastille Fortress, a very important symbol of the French King's power.

"La Teixidora" is a painting by Joan Planella Rodríguez. It represents a low class working girl in a factory during the Industrial Revolution in Catalonia.

Also named First World War. It was a global war originated in Europe that lasted four years.

The Spanish Civil War

Spanish society was divided about the reforms, some people were in favour of the changes and other people were not. This caused tension and violent conflicts. In 1936, a general named Franco led a military coup against the republican government. That was the beginnin of the Spanish Civil War. Spaniards were divided into two groups -the nationalists, led by Fanco, and the republicans. The civil war lasted 3 years and finally ended in 1939.

"The Guernica" painting by Picasso

Guernica is a large 1937 oil painting by Spanish artist Pablo Picasso. One of Picasso's best known works, Guernica is regarded by many art critics as one of the most moving and powerful anti-war paintings in history, Picasso painted Guernica at his home in Paris in response to the bombing of Guernica, a Basque Country town, by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy at the request of the Spanish Nationalists.

The Nationalists, led by Franciso Franco won the war and Franco established a dictatorship that lasted 36 years.

Also known as the Second World War, was a global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945.

The European Union

It was created in 1951. It is a union of countries to avoid missunderstandings after the 1st and the 2nd World Wars. There are 28 countries in the EU and not all the countries of Europe are members. Those who run the EU take part in the largest parliament in Europe in Brussels. The UK wants to leave the EU, what is called the Brexit.
