Gandalfs timeline in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings

In Tolkiens Legendarium, time is divided into three main parts: the Years of the Lamps, the Years of the Trees and the Years of the Sun. In this particular time we won't be refering to the first two ones because they are the equivalent of the Genesis for the christians and the world we see in the films was very distant from the world in those times. The years of the Sun are divided into four eras, from which we are interested in the third one.

Thráin II rescue

This is the next time Gandalf meets with the Saurons power after the trip to Dol Guldur. He's looking for a dwarf that had gone missing five years ago when he finally finds that he was captured by The Necromancer, who turned out to be Sauron. He had stolen one of the seven Rings, so that way Gandalf realized that Sauron was looking for the One Ring, so he started his own search.

Battle of the Five Armies

Long after the rescue of Thráin, Gandalf starts a quest for trying to weaken Sauron by making him lose allies. One of the most feared was the dragon Smaug. the quest for destroying him is told in The Hobbit, where gandalf first meets with Bilbo Bolson and many other character that will participate in the Lord Of The Rings. After the death of Smaug, five armies meet in combat for the trove of Smaug (mountains of gold). The combatants form two principal coalitions: Orcs and Wargs from the Misty Mountain and Men of Dale, Elves and Dwarves. You can probably guess in which side Gandalf was. After an epic battle, the evil forces suffer great loses and the Necromancer/Sauron is weakened again.

Bilbo's Farewell Birthday Party

This may be the most important point of this whole timeline. What happened is that Bilbo, owner of the One Ring, organized a birthday (200 years old, very important for a hobbit)/farewll party, because he was retiring and leaving The Shire. Gandalf was one of the main organizers of the party,as he was a Bilbo's good friend. Because of this party, gandalf recognizes that Bilbo has the One Ring, and finally convinces him to let Frodo, his nephew, go on a quest to destroy the ring. Right in this point is where The Lord Of The Rings starts.

Fight against the Balrog of Khazad-Dùn

After completing the Fellowship, they all set to Mordor to destroy the One Rings. However, they had to cross the Misty Mountains, so they passed through it by entering an old realm of dwarves, destroyed by a creature called the Thorins Bane. This creature, an ancient demigod, is a fire spirit called Balrog. He meets the Fellowship and, in order to save them, Gandalf gets involved in a 10 day fight that takes him to the deepest part of the earth and to the highest peak of the highest mountain. He finally remains victorius, yet he has to undergo a preocess of healing that makes him the new White Wizard. The consequences of this will be discovered later.

Battle for Minas Tirith

Here takes place the biggest and most relevant battle of the whole Third Age. Here, everyone meets at the Pelennor Fields, right in front of Minas Tirith. In this battle, Angmar, the most powerful Nazgul, was defeated by Éowyn, the king Theoden's daughter. Gandalf was key here, because he got to fight with all the other Nazguls. This couldn't have been done if he had satyed like Gandalf The Grey
