At MechCon 2017 Russ Bullock promises modding support via Steam workshop and assures players they will be able to play co-op with people from their Steam friends list. He announces a December 2018 release date.

From January 1st to April 30th players can preorder MW5 Steam keys.
Russ Bullock says that "at the moment" there is no plan for MW5 to be an Epic exclusive and that "at the moment" the plan is to release it on Steam, GOG and Piranha's own launcher. In hindsight, his excessive use of the phrases "at the moment" and "now" makes it clear that he was expecting things to change.
According to the July 2019 AMAs there was a 3 day overlap. The exclusivity deal was finalized and PGI nevertheless still sold Steam keys.
Players are still being sold Steam keys despite PGI knowing that the game would become an Epic exclusive title.
All mentions of Steam keys are gone, prompting players to worry about Epic exclusivity. Russ Bullock later confirms that the revamped FAQ was accidentally put online too early by the web team.
Confronted with Epic exclusivity speculation, he tries to calm people down, saying it was just an FAQ update. By that time the Epic contract had been signed for 3 months.
PGI announces on their homepage that MW5 will be postponed to December 10th 2019 and will be Epic exclusive for 1 year. Refuns will be accepted until September 1st 2019.

Russ Bullock announces that an email about the changes will be sent to buyers one week later. So far buyers of Steam keys had to check the homepage to find out about the exclusivity deal.
According to a tweet by Russ Bullock, Gamescom was when he would hacve likely wanted to inform people about the Epic exclusivity deal.
