Correspondence courses led to a new way to approach learning and to whole universities dedicated to distance education. The first university to offer distance learning that led to degree completion.
Founded in 1873 by Anna Eliot Ticknor, the daughter of a Harvard professor, it was the first correspondence school in the United States.
Open education is the philosophy that everyone deserves and should have access to educational resources and experiences.
Established by charter in 1969, Open University in the United Kingdom is a large public research university.
With new technologies emerging rapidly, the ability to access education and educational resources increased dramatically as well.

Dr. David Wiley has worked extensively in the area of open content, open educational resources, and open education. He has given many talks regarding the importance of removing barriers to knowledge and sharing that knowledge while reducing cost associated with education.
Open Educational Resources are those materials that are available to be freely shared and can survive the test of the 5R's laid out by Dr. Wiley.
Open Learning Exchange has as its mission the breakdown of the three biggest barriers to education: lack of materials, lack of teachers, and lack of connections. OLE believes that through educating everyone, the cycle of violence and poverty can end.
Massive Open Online Courses are open access, unlimited participant courses that are offered online via the internet.
