SING SING SING (Benny Goodman)

Benny Goodman, also known as "The King of Swing", was the clarinetist composer responsible for multiple hit singles as a band leader before World War II. Goodman left school at the age of 14 to join the American Federation of Musicians, but he left in 1929 and moved to New York City. He reached the height of his popularity in the 1930's/1940’s, when swing was most popular, creating many hits. He released one of his most trademark songs, "Sing, Sing, Sing (with a Swing)," in 1938 which was later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. By 1940, Goodman's meteoric career showed signs of fading. In 1942, Goodman married John Hammond's sister, Alice. The couple eventually had two daughters together, Rachel and Benjie. After World War II ended in 1945, Goodman started performing with small groups over the years. In the 1950s and 1960s, Goodman spent a lot of time abroad; He toured Europe in 1950. Despite his failing health, Goodman continued to perform during the 1980s. He died of heart failure on June 13, 1986, in New York City—just days after his final performance. Not long before his death, he had received a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award as well as honorary degrees from Brandeis University and Bard College.Still remembered as one of jazz's greatest artists, Goodman was featured on a postage stamp in 1996 as part of the Legends of American Music series.

ETTA JAMES - At Last

Etta James, was an American singer of soul and jazz genres, considered one of the great voices in the history of rhythm & soul. Her tone of voice allowed her to become a gospel singer, performing in the choir of her neighborhood church in Los Angeles. Etta returned Los Angeles to record a song with the band Otis and the vocalist Richard Berry. In the end this trio was called The Peaches. The Peaches disbanded soon, and Etta continued singing solo. His solo career took her to the top with the song At Last. The lyrics tell us about a love that at first you know is the one of your life. And when you are with that person, everything else doesn’t matter, it’s like if you were just you and that special person. It also tells us that having found that person you already have a place in heaven because it will be all perfect.

RUM AND COCA-COLA - The Andrews Sisters

This song was writen by 'Belasco/Patterson in 1906. Lord Invader used the melody and changed the words, he wrote a song about the prostitution of women in Trinidad . His song was reworked again and sung by 'The Andrew Sisters' - they never acknowledged Lord Invader. Later, Lord Invader was awarded a petty compensation in 1955: neither he nor Lionel Belasco were ever mentioned as authors of 'Rum and coca Cola. The Andrew Sister's version play more to the stereotyped island paradise theme . The whole hula skirt, coconut in hand, living in hammock's deal, but the original is a true calypso (typical composition of the Caribbean) The Andrew Sisters' 1945 version of "Rum and Coca Cola" became one of their most populars and best-know recordings, but also provoked some controversy. Some radio stations didn’t want to play the record because it mentioned a commercial product by names (Coca-Cola), and because the lyrics were about local women from Trinidad prostituting themselves to U.S. soldiers. The sisters later told biographers that they were asked to record the tune and were unaware either of the copyright for the original composer of the melody (Belasco) or the implications in prostitution of the lyrics.

You Never Can Tell - Chuck Berry

“You Never Can Tell” was released to the public in 1964, being sung by the mythical Chuck Berry. This song has a style of rock and roll, very popular by the time (although it emerged in 1950s). This genre is a mixture of blues, boogie and jazz, styles related to African-American culture. This culture really inspired Chuck. The song has a very good rhythm, and that shocks a lot because this song was written and played in jail.

That’s what people think but in 2014 Paul McCartney said that the music was about his mother and the melancholia about her dead.

Good Vibrations - The Beach Boys

In October 1966, "Good Vibrations" song was released, which was associated with the practice of surfing. This song was part of the album Pet Sounds, which led the group to be one of the most innovative of the rock up to that time. Half a century later, when the songs of that time were reviewed, this is one that time has not forgot from the memory of millions of listeners. When they released "Good vibrations" the Beach Boys were the most popular band in the United States. The group was formed five years before, in 1961, in the city of Hawthorne. They were three brothers Brian, who was the leader, Carl and Dennis Wilson, with a cousin Mike Love and a friend Al Jardine. Later, Brian, would be replaced by Bruce Johnston, at the time he became an unbearable guy, because of drugs. In the mid-60s, a decade considered to be the brightest, musically, of the last century, rock, which was so important in the previous decade to young people, was going through an unstable period due to constant changes in society and socio-political events. The war in Vietnam led, among other things, to a widespread protest among the American population. The young people angrily expressed their opposition to the conflict and ended up embracing pacifism by meeting in communes in San Francisco, proclaiming free love, wrapped in clouds and dreams under the effects of psychedelic drugs. "Make love and not war," they said in unison. That movement gave way to a creative process of songs inspired by such feelings and proclamations. This completely influenced the group, whose songs reflected the youthful culture of Southern California: surfing, cars and romance.

PINK FLOYD--Remember a Day

"Remember a Day" is a song recorded by Pink Floyd for the album A Saucerful of Secrets (1968), written and sung by Rick Wright. The sessions in which it was recorded also included "Jugband Blues", "Vegetable Man", "In the Beechwoods" and "John Latham". It was performed in September 2008 by David Gilmour, in memory of Richard Wright, keyboardist, founder and partner of Gilmour in Pink Floyd, who died at that time as a result of a short battle against cancer at the age of 65. Andrew King, the manager of Pink Floyd, mentions: "Remembrance Of Lane Lea ... we make 'Vegetable Man' there ... and 'Remember a Day', in which Syd makes a guitar solo". Another curiosity about this song is the null participation of Nick Mason, drummer of Pink Floyd. This is because the song is being recorded in mid-1967, that is, in advance, and by then Mason could not find a correct rhythmic base for this song. It was then that Norman Smith, producer of the album, took charge of this task, adding also accompaniment in the choirs of the song. The release of the single in the US contains monaurally edited versions of the two songs. This single was never distributed in the United Kingdom.

However Bob wrote it and credited it, but because of some problems with the record industry and as thanks for his friendship he gave him the right of the lyrics and music. Bob Marley composed this song to dedicate it to his wife Rita, who suffered depression as a consequence of his husband´s tours and his infidelities. The lyrics talk about the memories that overwhelm Rita and she asks her not to cry over the things that have already happened and can not be changed. It's time to think about the future. DON’T STOP ME NOW | Queen

.“DON’T STOP ME NOW” This song was released in 1978. It was launched by the famous band called Queen, in their album Jazz. This song reached the first ten position on the Britain radio list, but in America it wasn´t so popular and it only reached the eighty-sixth position. Queen was a British rock band formed in 1970 in London by the singer Freddie Mercury, the guitarist Brian May, the drummer Roger Taylor and the bassist Jonh Deacon. They had a significant impact in the United States at the end of the years 1970, already with a large repertoire of successes. They were differentiated by its great musical diversity, its arrangements and its vocal harmonies. It is considered a band of great influence in the development of hard rock and heavy metal, and in their shows as innovators to start using spotlights, gas among other elements. It was written by Freddie Mercury during his vacation in Switzerland. In addition to what is the song about, in this song we can get the difference between the ironic and desire and it is plenty of incredible verses that can manage the perfection. Furthermore, the empowering song shows Freddie feeling unstoppable, to clarify we have some verse as "floating around in ecstasy," "like a tiger defying the laws of gravity," and "traveling at the speed of light." Moreover, it shows how Freddie threw caution to the wind, putting himself in danger: "I am a satellite, I'm out of control" and "I am a sex machine ready to reload”

THILLER - MICHAEL JACKSON

The american singer Michael Jackson, know as "The King of Pop", revolutionized the audiovisual world with his innovating videoclips and surprised everyone with his musical talent that he reflected in his songs.                      “Thriller” was a completely revolt for the 80’s music and one of the most important pop hits of the history because of the things that Michael maked up, like for example thespecial effects wich he used in the music video that went people crazy.                               The song talks about the danger of the monsters and creatures that appear in Horror Films or Thrillers...you can think that aren't real but you should be careful at midnight because everything could happen if you are in the wrong place.

SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY - U2

This song is the opening track from U2's 1983 album, War. Sunday Bloody Sunday is the name given to actual events that occurred on January 30th, 1972 where soldiers in the British Army fired on a group of civil right protestors and bystanders in the town of Derry, Northern Ireland. Thirteen men were killed that day and this is the basis for the U2 song of the same name. The band has come out and said this is an anti-war song that is not a call for rebels to unite, but actually a call for people to unite against violence. Lead singer Bono says, "How long, how long must we sing this song". He means that how many people need to die and how many wars need to be fought before we realize what a life is really worth. In the third verse, Bono points out that many people have been killed during this war, but no one has really won. He goes on to say that this atrocity and others like it around the globe are swept under the rug or glossed over by media outlets in such a way that the facts appear to be "fiction" and what we see and read in the papers and on television are the doctored reality. The song actually has very little to do with Christmas! It's mainly about a failed relationship, and coming face to face with them a year later. Only the phase 'Last Christmas' - when the relationship comes to a head - actually refers to the festive season. Andrew later revealed that the song came about when they were visiting George's parents

Nirvana: Come as you are

This song called Come as you are, belongs to the album Nevermind [1991], work of the band Nirvana that is grunge style. This song is one of the responsible for popularizing the group Nirvana and the grunge movement. It is one of the most optimistic songs created by the Nirvana group because most of them were dark lyrics. The theme of the song is acceptance and invites the listener to accept himself as he is. It had a lot of controversy because of the relationship between the death of the singer Kurt Cobain in 1994 and a phrase that is repeated in the letter about guns in which he mentions "And I swear that I don't have a gun". Another rumour about the song is that this song was dedicated to the daughter who was going to have Frances Bean.

ZOMBIE - The Cranberries

Zombie is the most popular song of the Irish quartet, The Cranberries. This song is a protest song written about the 1993 IRA bombing in Warrington, and in memory of two young victims, Johnathan Ball and Tim Parry,12 and 3 years old. The song also refers to the violence that devastated Northern Ireland for decades, particularly in the 70s and 80s, due to clashes between the British troops deployed in Warrington and the Irish nationalists due to the search for the annexation of the territory to the Irish Republic. It was written by Dolores O'Ryan in her own home after knowing the bleak fact. The song was published on September 14 of 1994 and it was included in their second album "No Need To Argue". As for the musical, Zombie has all the elements of a grunge anthem. Ripped guitars and a dense rhythm, accompanied by the vocal seal of O'Riordan, who adapted the traditional Irish singing style of alternating bass and treble to the harrowing wave of 90's rock. In the lyrics we can see sentences that show that this song is inspired by pain:

CALIFORNICATION (Red Hot Chili Peppers)

Red Hot Chili Peppers are a Californian rock band who have combined aspects of funk and hip-hop with rock and roll, pioneering funk metal. The band started in 1984. One critic has summarized their lyrics as 'sex, good times, rock and roll and more sex'. Perhaps the most distinctive feature of their sound is the bass playing of Flea, whose flashy, slap-heavy playing not only provides a groove but is also the source of many musical flourishes. They are also well known for playing bare chested, in fact Flea often goes one step further and performs naked on stage. Epic Records offered the band a contract where each member would be paid a million dollars, but through some odd fate, the deal did not fall through and the Red Hot Chili Peppers signed with Warner Brothers Records. After the sobering death of guitarist Hillel Slovak, the Red Hot Chili Peppers would also lose Jack Irons, which would lead to the addition of current members, John Frusciante and Chad Smith.

Bon Jovi is a rock band from New Jersey that was founded in 1983. This band used the so-called "glam sound", that liked in the 80s, but with the appearance of alternative rock in the nineties this style decayed. Many thought that these bands would end up disappearing, but, in their case, it did not happen. They were very successful. One of his best songs was this: It's my Life. It's my life is a song that was published in the year 2000. In the lyrics we can know the story of Tommy and Gina. Tommy is a normal guy who is on his computer trying to watch a Bon Jovi concert. Suddenly his girlfriend, Gina, calls him to tell him that she is at the concert and if he wants to arrive in time to see it live he has to be there in 5 minutes. We can see how Tommy runs through the streets of the city to arrive on time while being chased by dogs, he meets people disguised as Elvis, crosses the street in the middle of traffic, jumps over cars and a bridge. Gina and Tommy are characters that appeared on other songs too. For this reason in the song they also want to pay homage to them, because they "never gave up"

GREEN DAY - Wake me up when September ends

This song of Green Day is the fourth single of its seventh album, American Idiot, that left in 2004, but the video clip in 2005. The song and its title are based on what Billie Joe Armstrong, the lead singer of the band, felt after his father died. Billie himself explains that the title is what he told his mother after running away from his father's funeral and shutting himself in the room. He said this because he could not accept the death of his father and wanted everything to be a dream that would end in October. For more information about the band: https://www.greenday.com/
