The United States and Israel have a long and complicated relationship. Since the United States' initial recognition of Israel as an independent state, the relationship between the two countries have fluctuated and changed throughout the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

1948 Arab-Israeli War

After Israel's success in the war, Israel was able to take control of almost 60% of the area allocated to the proposed Arab state. The state of Israel was officially formed.

Yom Kippur War

Egypt and Syria retailiate against Israel in hopes of regaining lost lands. While Israel suffers at first, the United States air lifts weapons to Israeli forces, allowing them to counter-attack. Some historians see this war as the first move from the United States to act as a peacemaker of sorts between Israel and other Middle East countries.

Israel fights Egypt, Jordan, and Syria to take over control of Gaza Strip, East Jerusalem, Syra's Golan Heights, and Egypt's Sinai Penninsala.

Lebanese Civil War

Lebanese Civil War Following the displacement of Palestinian refugees from what became Israel, led to a fight between the Maronite Christians that ran the government of Lebanon and the PLO. The United States tried to negotiate peace between the two sides, after Israel attacks Syrian and Palestine forces, and the PLO agrees to withdraw (incidentally, leading to American troops being deployed into Lebanon.)

United States President Jimmy Carter helps negotiate compromise and peace between Egypt and Israel, which eventually leads to the 1979 Egyptian Israeli Peace Treaty.

Oslo I Accord

The Oslo Accords were signed in Washington DC under the watch of Bill Clinton. It was a move towards peace and compromise in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Israel and Jordan finally negotiate a peace treaty and delineate certain boundaries and compromises.
