In Russia games with a ball have been around since ancient time. Several centuries ago the Russians played with a special ball filled with feathers. The games were held on the city squares. One of these games was called “shalyga”.
Modern football appeared in the middle of the 19th century in England. Nowadays there are about 200 countries in the Interenational Foolball Federation (FIFA, founded in 1904). In 1900 football was included into the program of the Olimpic Games. World Championships have been held since 1930. Championships of Europe have been organised since 1960.
In 1891 an Irish football expert John Penalty offered to punish teams with a direct kick made from 11 metres distance. It should have been done for unsportsmanlike behavior and playing with hands. This kick was first put into practice in Irish Football League. Since then it has been known as a penalty kick.
English sailors brought football into Russian cities a hundred years ago. The first Russian teams were organised in Odessa, Nikolayev, Saint-Petersburg. In Moscow football appreared later.
The first state football competitions in Russia took place in the beginning of the 20th century. First – in S-Petersburg, then – in Moscow.
Leo Yashin, a well-known Soviet football goalkeeper, first was a hockey goalkeeper. He and his team became winners in the USSR Hockey Cup and Championship of the USSR in 1953. But later Leo Yashin concentrated on football and became an outstanding football goalkeeper.
In 1956 Soviet footballers became Olimpic Champions for the first time. In four years they became holders of Europe Cup. The Soviet football team became Olimpic Champions in 1988 again.
Afer a long failure Russian football team took the third place in European Championship in 2008. Now our country is looking forward to receiving The World Cup in summer, 2018.
In many English-speaking countries football is also called “soccer”. It comes from phrase “association football”. As a rule name “soccer” is popular in the countires where there are different kinds of football take place. For example, rugby, American football and Canadian football.
There is no accurate date of football birth. But this game has been around for many hundreds of years. The exercises with a ball were popular in many countries in all continents. In Ancient China a very similar game was named “Cuju”.
