Helga established Hauʻoli Mau Loa Foundation in 1990 as a way “to return the generosity of the islands” where she had “found great happiness.”
The Foundation elected its first officers and directors. Hans Bertram-Nothnagel, President; Helga Glaesel-Hollenback, Vice President; Ronald J. Weiss, Secretary and Treasurer. Helga and Hans were named as the first Directors of the organization.
The Foundation awards its first grant: $100,000 to Queen's Medical Center to support The Queen's Nursing Institute.

In response to the devastating hurricane that pummeled the island of Kaua‘i in September of 1992, Helga wanted to find a way to help the island recover and rebuild.
Helga is given a Hawaiian name.
A Grant of up to $2 million promised to Kaua'i Housing Development Corporation for the establishment of Hau'oli Mau Loa Village.
After a battle with cancer, Helga passes away.
Wayne M. Pitluck was elected as a Director of the Foundation to assist Hans Bertram-Nothnagel in carrying on Helga's mission.
A grant of up to $250,000 was committed to support the establishment of Aloha Harvest, a First Generation Partner of the Foundation.
