Period 1

The first period of AP US History (Period 1: 1491 – 1607) sets the stage for 13 British colonies in America. This period accounts for only 5% of the APUSH exam and does not include a vast amount of information. There are three mains themes in Period 1: The first is indigenous populations, how they came from North America and the fact that three large indigenous empires existed prior to European contact. The second theme is the dominance of Spanish exploration; Britain was not the premier world power in the 14th and 15th century and Spain controlled much of the early New World exploration and colonization. And the third theme is the foundation of British colonizing. The defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588 established Britain as the premier naval power and allowed them to pursue their colonization interest, which began to form in the 17th century.
