During the 1890s Finland was still under Russias rule known as the Grand Duchy of Finland, an autonomous part of the Russian Empire.
17th of September 1891 25 year old Karl Fazer opened a french-russian confectionery in Helsinki.
Fazer started making chocolate in 1894, and industrially producing sweets in 1897.
Fazer’s oldest product that is still on the market and it's production started at 1895.
Finland was the first country in Europe and the third country in the world (after New Zealand and Australia) to give women the right to vote in 1906.
In World War 1 Finnish officers served in Russian army. Also Finnish volunteers went to war in the Russian troops.Secretly trained Finnish volunteers were sent to Germany. They also participated in the war in the world war in Courland.
Finland declared it's independence on the 6th of December 1917. Finland wanted to become independent after the people's faith in the russian emperor lessened. Final push for Finlands inpedence was the revolution in Russia.
Taloussuklaa, in english: baking chocolate, came on the market in same year that Finland became independent. Taloussuklaa is popular with baking.
Fazerin sininen, or Fazer Blue is maybe the most popular product produced by Fazer. It is held in high regard amongst Finns.
The founder of Fazer, Karl Fazer died on 9th of October 1932. At that time there where about 3 million people in Finland.
Finland participated in three major conflicts during World War II. One of the conflicts was Winter War in which Finland managed to defend its independence, but had to give nearly 10% of its territory and pay out a large amount of war reparations to the Soviet Union.
During the World War 2 Fazer made makaroni and cookies for the army.
Summer Olympics in 1952 were 12. organized summer olympics. It was the first and so far the only hosts in Finland. Olympics were also one of the most well-received events in Finland. Helsinki had been earlier selected to host the 1940 Summer Olympics, which were cancelled due to World War II.
The Helsinki Olympics in 1952 increased their interest in sports. In honor of the event, Fazer made Olympia pastilles, chocolate medals and conveys packed appropriately for the theme.
Geisha is Fazer's international brand and it is sold in 36 countries.
On March 1st 2000 Tarja Halonen became president and she stayed in office until the 1st of March 2012
On December 6th 2017 it will have been 100 years from Finland declaring its independence. This is celebrated troughout the year in Finland for example in theater productions and museum exhibits. Fazer has also created a line of sweets in honor of Finlands 100th year of Independence.
