American Youth Congress

The Great Depression spurs students form the American Youth Congress. The group is critical of President Franklin D. Roosevelt for not providing enough aid to young Americans, but First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt is a supporter. She encouraged a partnership with the White House.

American Youth Congress disbands

The AYC falls apart after promoting Russia's nonaggression pact with Nazi Germany in the lead-up to World War II. They lose the support of Eleanor Roosevelt.

Student Peace Union founded

Students at the University of Chicago form a pacifist group.

Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee formed

The SNCC was the student arm of the Civil Rights Movement, but it stayed independent of and often challenged Martin Luther King Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. The SNCC staged protests throughout the 1960s and participated in 1961's Freedom Rides.

The rise of the New Left begins as SDS creates the Port Huron Statement. The statement lays out the idea of "political ownership," or regular people taking action in issues that affect their lives.
