On the 15th of February 1874, Sir Ernest Shackleton was born. He was born in Country Kildare, Kilkea, Ireland.
When Sir Ernest Shackleton was sixteen, he joined the merchant navy. His dad actually wanted him to become a doctor of some sought but he seemed drawn to the sea
This was his first expedition that was lead by Captain Scott. Unfortunately, Shackleton fell ill and had to be sailed back to England on the relief ship called 'Morning'
The Nimrod expedition was Sir Ernest Shackleton's second expedition. On expedition he got the closest to the South Pole than anyone before him.
The Endurance is the most well known expedition that Shackleton went on. It is well known because the ship 'Endurance' got trapped and crushed in the ice. This caused Shackleton to make a huge decision. Him and five of his crew made a 16 day journey to South Georgia to find help. In August 1916, the remaining crew members were rescued. None of the crew died during the mission.
On the 5th of January, Ernest Shackleton died. He died on in Grytviken, South Georgia Islands. He died of a heart-attack and was buried on the island.
