OPPORTUNITY AWAITS

The creative presentation and visual merchandising to the consumer of candies, novelties, snacks, gifts and related accessories were the stepchild of their own industry. In the early 80s there were no upscale self-service candy retail concepts in America that focused on an exciting and deeply specialized and broad product selection. The founder and owner of CANDICO, Klaus Petersen, would soon revolutionize candy retail with his spectacular retail vision of “The Candico Theatre” and its nationwide breakthrough. Petersen’s motto, inspired by John D. Rockefeller, is: “Take Something Common And Make It Uncommon!”

CANDICO - WORLD'S SWEETEST FUN LAUNCHES!

Recognizing this enormous window of opportunity and drawing on his architectural design background and his international resources, Petersen invents and develops the upscale and worldwide unique CANDICO Pick-and-Mix retail concept from 1983 to 1986.

A WELCOME INNOVATION!

A major contribution to CANDICO’s eventual popularity and success originates with the innovative and highly sanitary “funnel and rake” dispensers that were invented and, despite persistent and costly prototype hurdles, were stubbornly developed and implemented by Petersen in all subsequent CANDICO stores. These exclusive and consumer-friendly self-service dispensers largely eliminate product pollution, vandalism and other abuses that are usually associated with less sanitary bulk dispensers. The funnel & rake design also prevents the unauthorized return of candy product into the dispensers.

PROOF POSITIVE

Petersen opens the first in-line CANDICO store at Rockaway Townsquare in New Jersey. To resounding popular and professional acclaim and with an astounding revenue per square foot, the store offers an unprecedented product mix of nearly 1,000 different bulk candy, novelty, snack and gift items and related accessories on an effective retail space of less than 500 sq. ft. The major mall owners / operators at that time, such as The Rouse Company, CPI Corporate Property Investors, Melvin Simon, DeBartolo and others welcome the new concept enthusiastically and proclaim that “every shopping center in North America needs a store like CANDICO”.

SWEET SUCCESS!

The highly creative, upscale and commercially successful CANDICO retail concept is an immediate success and is eventually followed by a corporate owned chain of 18 in-line stores of between 500 and 1,000 sq. ft. in major regional shopping centers along the east coast from New York to Miami.

UNPRECEDENTED REVENUES AND PROFITS!

The new CANDICO flagship store at Bridgewater Commons in New Jersey generates an astounding $ 1,020.00 in annual net sales per active retail square foot when domestic sales in regional shopping centers average $ 200.00 per sq. ft. CANDICO consistently ranks first in its category of “ Highest Sales Volume Overall “ and “ Highest Dollar Sales Per Square Foot”.

CANDY IN-YOUR-FACE!

CANDICO has taken candy and its fun experience from obscurity and low image to an “in-your-face” presentation and visibility that literally creates a new retail market nationwide. The Candico Theatre offers more than 1,000 bulk, novelty, gift and seasonal candy products in an impulse-inducing environment of solid gold oldies music, new and nostalgic smells and colors of a previously unknown variety of quality candies. All this produces an extraordinarily high gross profit margin of more than 60%, more than twice of that achieved by traditional retailers.

CANDICO FRANCHISE GOLD?

Petersen continues to be pursued and literally overwhelmed by investors and speculators with proposals and financial “incentives” to franchise the CANDICO concept. His only and never wavering refusal is best demonstrated by Edvard Munch’s iconic “The Scream”. All attempts by third parties to franchise Candico were flatly rejected in order to pursue the key elements of Petersen’s mission: “Independence, Quality, Service And Innovation Above All!”

THE SHOP-IN-SHOP BOUTIQUE

Petersen expands the fun, pleasure and satisfaction of confectionery and gift-giving with the creative shop-in-shop boutique, a deeply specialized concept for any retailer with unused or under-utilized space, such as candy, gift and card shops, gift-basket and flower stores, yogurt-, ice cream-, bagel-, specialty food and gourmet shops, resorts, hotels, cruise ships and other retail, entertainment and service venues.
