YEMEN: PRESIDENTIAL DECREE DECLARES ALL VICTIMS OF THE PEACEFUL REVOLUTION AS MARTYRS

President Hadi issued a presidential decree that stated all victims of the peaceful revolution are now martyrs who sacrificed their souls for their country. The decree included the adoption of a salary for each martyr or disabled person. People who are partially disabled will be taken care of underneath the Social Welfare Fund.

UN Human Rights Council establishes Fact Finding Mission on Syria

Pursuant to the request of the Resolution A/HRC/RES/S-16/1 of the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC), adopted on 29 April 2011, the High Commissioner for Human Rights established a Fact Finding Mission to investigate all alleged violations of international human rights law in Syria; to establish the facts and circumstances of such violations and of the crimes perpetrated, with a view to avoiding impunity and ensuring full accountability.

LIBYA: ICC ORDERS LIBYA TO HAND OVER EX-SPY CHIEF

Judges at the International Criminal Court (ICC) ordered Libyan authorities to immediately to hand over Abdullah al-Senussi, deposed Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi’s former intelligence chief. The written order sets up the latest legal showdown between the Hague-based court and Libyan authorities, who say they plan to put Senussi on trial themselves. The ICC has indicted Senussi on crimes against humanity charges for the murder and persecution of protesters in the early days of the uprising that eventually toppled Gaddafi in 2011.

LIBYA EX-PM AL-BAGHDADI AL-MAHMOUDI ON TRIAL

Libya’s former Prime Minister al-Baghdadi al-Mahmoudi has gone on trial in Tripoli charged with “acts that led to the unjust killing of Libyans”. Mr Mahmoudi and two others are also accused of funnelling about $25m ($16m) of public money through Tunisia to help forces supporting Col Gaddafi.

LIBYA’S PARLIAMENT DEBATES VETTING LAW

Libya’s parliament, the General National Congress, is debating a draft bill that would bar anyone deemed to have had ties to the former regime from state institutions for 10 years. Another body, called the Supreme Agency for Standards of Integrity and Nationalism, vets Libyans for links to the regime. Sifting through thousands of pages of documents culled from the archives of the regime’s Revolutionary Committees, the agency’s workers search for evidence of links to Gadhafi’s government or security agencies by current officials.

TUNISIA'S BEN ALI HANDED THIRD LIFE SENTENCE

Tunisia's ousted president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali on Tuesday was handed a third life sentence since he fled to Saudi Arabia in January 2011 during a mass uprising against his rule. The military court in Sfax, southeast Tunisia, convicted Ben Ali over the violent repression of protests in the region during the revolution in which one person died and two others were injured, the official TAP news agency reported.

COURT ORDERS MUBARAK’S RELEASE

The North Cairo Court ordered the release on Wednesday of former president Hosni Mubarak in the so-called “Ahram gifts” case, in which Mubarak allegedly accepted $11m worth of gifts, including jewellery and watches, from the state-run newspaper Al-Ahram. He has allegedly already repaid the amount of the gifts, and the other defendants in the case have been released, suggesting that the charges against Mubarak could eventually be dropped.

SEIF AL-ISLAM GADDAFI TO STAND TRIAL FOR MURDER IN LIBYA

Late Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi's son and his spy chief were charged on Tuesday with murder in relation to the country's 2011 civil war and are set to stand trial, said Libya's general prosecutor. Abdel-Qader Radwan told reporters that the trial will start Sept. 19 on alleged crimes committed during Gadhafi's 42-year rule and during the eight-month-long civil war that deposed him. The defendants are former intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senoussi and Seif al-Islam Gadhafi, the heir apparent and only son of the former dictator who is in custody. A total of 28 former regime members will face trial that day on various charges ranging from murder, forming armed groups in violation of the law, inciting rape and kidnappings.

UN TO BOOST SYRIA CHEMICAL-WEAPONS TEAM

The UN Security Council has authorised backing up the operation of dismantling of Syria’s chemical-weapons stockpile with 100 extra international experts. The plan, proposed by Ban Ki-moon, the UN secretary-general, has suggested maintaining a “light footprint”, deploying only the personnel needed at any given time and operating out of Cyprus and Damascus.
