In 2010, the FAO and Bioversity International confirmed the definition of a sustainable diet as: "those diets with low environmental impacts which contribute to food and nutrition security and to healthy life for present and future generations."
The Roadmap descriped outlines how will the Europe's economy be transformed into a sustainable one by 2050. This policy works as "incentives for healthier and more sustainable production and consumption of food and to halve the disposal of edible food waste in the EU by 2020."
In order to promote the development of the sustainable policy, a public consultation on the "Sustainability of the Food System" was launched in 2013. Stakeholders were asked for their opinion about how to make people adapt the food. The consultation will be a part of the Communication on Sustainable Food by the European Commission.
Some regionalised diets like the Mediterranean diet, which was used as a basis in research published, were used to measure the sustainability of diets. People used the in order to measure change of environment, economy and society, and aid decision-making processes at regional and national scales.
Modern sustainable diets are not only focus on reducing the impact of global warming, but broader environmental factors, as well as social and economic challenges.
