1920's he released his 3rd silent film, which would classify as a thriller film. It was similar to Jack the ripper plot, which caused lots of suspense and biting of nails.

Murder's In The Zoo

This was about a murderous zoo keeper that had the theme of a crime thriller, it was directed by Edward Sutherland in 1933. It started to create a pattern of themes in films that are more creepy and unusual.

Forreign Correspondent - Alfred Hitchcock

As time went on, the theme was created for a thriller. This was done by repeated codes seen in the films e.g. the suspense, the music, the storyline. His work carried on in this genre for a long time, especially in the 1940's e.g. the storylines of his films all had thriller in mind, so he could work with suspense and feelings of the audience.

Cloak and Dagger

This followed the themes like the films previous to it, as it followed the actor, Gary Cooper as an atomic scientist and his way to discover the Germans plans to build the atomic bomb. Bombs = suspense, you never know when they will go off.

During the 1950's Hitchcock started to change the way we viewed thrillers. He now used technicolour and slowly said goodbye to black and white films. Strangers on a train was just as he started to make this change.

Here is an example of him now using colour in his films, he starts to experiment on what works well in thrillers, suspense always staying with him.

Psycho - Alfred Hitchcock.

Here we see one of his most successful films he ever made, psycho is probably the most well known thriller ever. He perfects the codes and everything used in the film to portray suspense and keep us on the edge of our seats. It is about a woman who was murdered by a motel owner.

Repulsion

Directed by Roman Polanski, he created this film about a young woman who slowly/gradually goes mad and loses her sanity. The progression she shows throughout the film is full of suspense and is gripping.

In the 1970's filmmakers started to merge horror with thriller, as themes of violence and blood were added into the films, but still maintaining an obvious difference between the two genres. Duel can been seen as the start of this progression.

A thriller film which follows a couple that are upset and grieving after the death of their daughter, who drowned.

A influential film, as Noyce ended the 1980's with a film that inspired other film makers in the 90's, due to the reoccurring themes of obsession and trapped characters.

Silence Of The Lambs - Jonathan Demme

The famous film about a FBI detective tracking down a serial killer, with the help of a locked up killer, known as Hannibal Lecter. We see his horrifying side, from the use of gore and blood, but we keep the thriller genre as it focuses on the mentality of the characters. This also follows the obsession of the serial killer, wanting to have peoples skin to create his own new skin.
