Silent Films

D.W. Griffith’s “Intolerance” was the start of the title openings, as it included the starting screen like we can see in this photo. Very basic, black and white, and didn't last for very long.

To Kill A Mocking Bird

1962 film, To Kill A Mocking Bird. The focus in films was majorly on the typography and used black and white, non moving imagery, but things started to change. There was now interest in what was happening behind the font and it became a normal thing to include a brief clue as to what the film would be about whilst including credits.

Annie Hall

Annie Hall, 1977, with a long backstory to why this typeface was used for the opening, He uses Windsor font and he has used this for nearly all of his films since, all due to him asking a printer one morning eating breakfast what font is the best. He suggested Winsor, and he has used it ever since.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, was a comedy crime film in 2005, From the opening we can see lots of colour, funky looking fonts and a 60's crime cartoon feel, which is very different from the very first few title sequences that are just black and white and include basic themes. The font follows the movement of the visuals in the sequence.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

2005 crime-comedy Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, had the opening of a more 60's look animation, using specfic fonts and colours to get across the theme of crime/detective. It's more creative and unique, and shows a lot of changes from the very first black and white, plain font opening.

Up in the Air

Up in the Air, (2009). This mainly used aerial images and the font followed this theme as it was white and tall/long letters which is like the earth below it and fits in nicely.
