This digital timeline documents the long genesis of violence against Christians in Kandhamal. We have presented archive material from different sources here including scanned copies of letters from local priests dating back to the 1980s addressed to government officials alerting them of the growing tensions in Orissa.;xNLx;The main aim of this timeline is to illustrate that communal violence is not sporadic. The large scale violence that took place in Kandhamal in 2008 was preceded by years of smaller attacks. Communal violence in India and indeed in other parts of South Asia has a long genesis and a long-term impact. ;xNLx;
