The Beginning
At the very beginning, film wasn't a thing. Only photography had just been mastered, and it wasn't until 1895 that film was seen.

In 1895, the first film was created, L'Arrivée d'un train. This was a short film, that had no cuts or edits.

1903-03-04 09:02:34
Edwin Porter: The Great Train Robbery
First cuts are made s by Porter using the splicing machine, its the first time film has been 'cut.'
1915-03-05 09:02:34
D.W.Griffith
He used a lot of new shots back then, such as the close up in his film 'Birth of a Nation'.

Continuity Development
After Griffith used these jump cuts, it changed the way films were put together. Continuity was slowly being formed, thanks to Mr. Griffith being creative.

Erich Von Stroheim
Added colour to films, they did this by hand, adding colour onto the cuts in post production.

Sergei Eisenstein: Battleship Potemkin

Henry Ephon
Films were now fully in colour and Ephon started to use more advanced edits in his work, such as flashbacks and parallel editing.
1960-01-14 18:28:27
Psycho
Changed the way horror films and films in general can be constructed. Edits in this which created continuity, graphic match, shot reverse shot and many more.
1968-11-25 23:29:31
2001: A Space Odyssey
Full of wonderful edits, including an A jump cut using a graphical match of a bone being thrown into the air and suddenly we are taken thousands of years into the future where we see a spaceship.
1976-07-21 06:12:12
Advanced Changes Begin
From the last few films we can see that film makers are getting more creative and are testing what they can and can't do to form continuity.
1991-11-25 23:29:31
Silence of the Lambs
This film used parallel editing to show that two things were happening at the same time, this really showed how continuity could work well.
1999-11-25 23:29:31
The Matrix
Lots and lots of continuity edits, we can see how intricate these scenes are getting as there are now so many cuts being made, it brings the continuity to another level of detail.

Technology Advances
throughout the years, technology and the way films were being put together changed drastically, and helped continuity become what it is today. IT started off as one reel of film, then to being cut with a splicer and now there are editing software's that are all digital. This all improved continuity for the better.

Overall Conclusion
The history of continuity has gradually improved over time, it went from being one clip with no cuts, to now there being a variety of ways to show continuity whilst going from each shot. This was made easier thanks to technology improving alongside film making, as nowadays there is digital software which is much easier to create and test this edits. Overall the history of continuity is an ever evolving thing, that is due to these people creating inventive and unusual pieces, that we look up to today.
