007: Fleming and Beyond

This timeline traces the evolution of author Ian Fleming's James Bond character, from inception to present-day - created for LIS681: The Book

The name is Bond, James Bond. ;xNLx;;xNLx;The fictional spy character James Bond was born from Ian Fleming's pen in 1953 and still lives today. Although genre boundaries tend to be fodder for debate for those in the bookish community, the James Bond novels can be placed in the Adventure category of Adrenaline Genre fiction. ;xNLx;;xNLx;According to Saricks (2009), "...novels in the Adventure genre are action-packed, feature a hero on a mission, and are often set in exotic locales during times of war or peace" (p. 16).;xNLx;;xNLx;Ian Fleming Productions is responsible for the literary Bond character. Since Fleming's death in 1964, the company has commissioned various authors to write James Bond novels and keep the spy franchise alive. ;xNLx;;xNLx;However, Pucci (2015) asserts, "It is accepted that the heyday of the spy novel ended with the Cold War" (p. 36). Judging from the continuation of Fleming's Bond character over the past 60+ years, the spy novel and its fans are here to stay. ;xNLx;;xNLx;This timeline will chronicle the first books for each of the different James Bond authors, beginning with Ian Fleming in 1953. ;xNLx;;xNLx;References;xNLx;;xNLx;Pucci, M.
