Trial for Peter
Truth had earlier escaped the Dumont's with her daughter Sophia. Isabella's other daughter and son stayed behind. Shortly after her escape, Truth found out that her son Peter, who was only five years old, had been illegally sold to a man that lived in Alabama. She took this to court and won, making sure that Peter would return safely home. This was one of the first cases in which a black woman challenged a white man in a U.S. court and won.

The Liberator
"The Liberator" is published. This was written by abolitionists. Basically it was a newspaper that spoke out against slavery.

Change of Name
Isabella Baumfree changed her name to Sojourner Truth. She interpreted this as devoting her life to abolishing slavery. Sojourner means traveler and Truth means being real. When you put it together, she thought of it as she was traveling to speak the truth and only the truth.

Memorial Stone In Downtown Battle Creek
A memorial stone in honor of Sojourner Truth is placed in the Stone History Tower in Monument Park, downtown Battle Creek.

Sojourner Truth Memorial Highway
A part of Michigan state highway M-66 was designated the Sojourner Truth Memorial Highway to honor her.
