History Timeline of the Thriller Genre

My task is to research the history of the Thriller genre to see how it is developed over time and to gain awareness on how the codes and conventions have progressed and changed within the last century. By doing this research it will allow me to see what I want to base my Thriller film opening on and gain inspiration from the research.

1923-04-01 00:00:00

Safety Last! 1923

Directors: Fred C. Newmeyer and Sam Taylor This is stated to be the first ever thriller film and would fit into the experimental stage of Metz’s theory as not all of the codes and conventions were set as it was part comedy.

1927-02-14 00:00:00

The Lodger 1927

Director: Alfred Hitchcock This film would also come under the experimental stage of Metz’s genre theory however this was the first successfully popular feature length film that included only elements of the thriller genre such as suspense and a puzzle-solving storyline.

1960-09-08 00:00:00

Psycho 1960

Director: Alfred Hitchcock This film would come under the classical stage on Metz’s genre theory as it had established codes and conventions and is renowned for being the best definition for the thriller genre of all time (as stated on timerine.com) therefore many films will have taken inspiration from the particular codes and applied them to their own work.

1973-03-27 00:00:00

Sisters 1973

Director: Brian De Palma Like with psycho this film would also fit within the classical stage on Metz’s genre theory as even though it was obviously inspired by Alfred Hitchcock (as his favourite composer was featured within the music for the film); it has the typical conventions of suspense and mystery to it that others could follow.

1997-11-28 00:00:00

Alien: Resurrection 1997:

Director: Jean-Pierre Jeunet This film would come under the deconstruction stage of Met’z genre theory as previous thriller codes and conventions are still established, but they are also mixed with codes from two other sub genres (Sci-fi and action) to reinvent the genre, making it something new.

2010-10-15 00:00:00

Vampires Suck 2010:

Directors: Jason Friedberg, Aaron Seltzer This film would come under a parody in Metz’s genre theory as it is mocking a previous thriller hybrid ‘Twilight’ by featuring the codes but making them less suspenseful with a highly comedic factor within the film.
