The creation of Internet introduction of Cyberpunk

Ahead of you is a timeline depicting the birth of both the Internet and Cyberpunk and how it came about.

The internet.;xNLx;Definition: “A means of connecting a computer to any other computer anywhere in the world via dedicated routers and servers. When two computers are connected over the Internet, they can send and receive all kinds of information such as text, graphics, voice, video, and computer programs (Dictionary.com, 2016).” Something most of us use every day, the simple idea of opening up a bowser and typing something into a search engine is second nature to 2nd graders let alone a researcher or university student. However little of us know about the origins or the development of the internet, we know that tody anyone can access it with a mobile phone or computer but in the past this concept seemed almost trivial.;xNLx;Cyberpunk.;xNLx;An article on Neon Dystopia describes Cyberpunk as: “a sub-genre of science fiction that features advanced science and technology in an urban, dystopian future. On one side you have powerful mega-corporations and private security forces, and on the other you have the dark and gritty underworld of illegal trade, gangs, drugs, and vice. In between all of this is politics, corruption, and social upheaval (Neon Dystopia, 2016).” I believe nothing simplifies the idea of Cyberpunk then the saying of ‘high tech in a low life,’ or in other words the futures technology in the post apocalypse environment, minimal resources and lighting however advanced knowledge. But who came to terms with the idea of this life, when was it created and by who?

The launch of 'Sputnik'

On this day the first ever man made satellite was launched into outer space by the Soviet Union, this generated the idea that the Soviets were going to win the cold war(HISTORY.com, 2016), (History.nasa.gov, 2016). This caused an uproar in American society, the nation began to adapt t this new information by introducing new techniques in order to advance on the Soviets. These advancements consisted of development in "space-age technologies such as rockets, weapons and computers (HISTORY.com, 2016)."

J.C.R. Licklider

Joseph Carl Robnett Licklider or commonly know as J.C.R. Licklider was a scientist from M.I.T. and ARPA who proposed another solution to the Soviets advances, "a 'galactic network' of computers that could talk to one another," , it is now known as the ARPAnet. This would allow the US government to still communicate even if the Soviets destroyed the phone lines (HISTORY.com, 2016).

The first message was sent and delivered through the ARPAnet. The sender and reciver consisted of two large computers the size of a small house, one located at UCLA the other at Stanford. The simple message of "Login" was sent however only the first two letters were received due a a crash in the network (HISTORY.com, 2016).

Network Growth

By 1971 the network of of computers had dramatically increased with one in Hawaii, London and Norway. However the issue of how to create a world wide 'Internet' was still a porven issue (HISTORY.com, 2016).

Vinton Cerf

By the end of 1971 Vinton Cerf a computer scientist began developing a way for all of the computers on all of the world’s mini-networks to communicate with one another, “Transmission Control Protocol (TCP).” Chefs Protocol has been described as “the ‘handshake’ that introduces distant and different computers to each other in a virtual space.”

1980-01-13 03:17:40

The World Wide Web

The protocol that chef created truly transformed the internet to a world wide network. Throughout the 80's Scientists and researches used it as a way to send numerous amounts of different data and files from one place to another.

Burning Chrome

William Gibson considered the founder and father of 'Cyberpunk' released and published his short story Burning Chrome. A dystopian Cyberpunk novel about a wshed up hacker who plans to take down Chrome in all of her glory. This novel was consider one of the first pieces of evidence of cyberpunk history (Neon Dystopia, 2016).

Bruce Bethke

This year saw the release of the novel 'Cyberpunk' by Bruce Bethke (Bethke, 2016). Another major contestant in the development of the Cyberpunk lifestyle, Bruce was one of the first to admit that he had thought of this dystopian futuristic dark world several times in his life he just never published anything due to publishers saying that his ending wouldn't catch on and that he would need to re-write, to which he refused (Brucebethke.com, 2016).

Neuromancer

William Gibson published his debut novel 'Neuromancer' about a low level hustler who is accused of stealing from his employer resulting in him being punished and having a burning desire to avenge his name. Neuromancer came out in the peak of the 80's teens were 'totally into new and radical ideas', this only helped the development of cyberpunk to increase. Many authors began writing about the world that could be bound to exist one day, which lead to music, movie, architecture and fashion trends in places like Japan, Germany, Hong Kong and Shanghai (Wikipedia, 2016).

Tim Berners-Lee

Tim Berners-Lee a computer programmer from Switzerland developed and changed the internet forever. Berners-Lee is seen as the father of The World Wide Web, he developed a program that allowed user to not only use the the internet to send and receive data and files but a "web" that anyone can access with copious amounts of information, he very much created the internet we see today (HISTORY.com, 2016).
