Rolihlahla Dalibhunga Nelson Mandela was born in a small village in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. He was one of 13 childrens
At the age of seven, he was the first member of his family to go to school. At that time, all black children were given English names by their teachers. Rolihlahla became Nelson.
When Mandela was nine years old, his father died, and Mandela became the royal leader of his tribe
After he finished school, Nelson Mandela studied law at university. He also enjoyed boxing and running.

I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.
In 1964, he was sent to prision for life, for "trying to bring down the government". He spent 18 of this years in prision on Robben Island.
In 1990, Mandela was released from prision by the Prime Minister, Mr FW De Klerk.
In 1993, Mandela and De Klerk won the Nobel Peace Prize.
In 1994, Nelson Mandela became the first black President of the new South Africa.
In 1994, he was published the book Long walk to freedom.
