Henry T. Segerstrom Acquires a Jean Miró Sculpture

A cast-bronze sculpture, Oiseau, by the Catalan artist Joan Miró, is acquired by Henry T. Segerstrom for the eventual placement in one of his office building lobbies. Its form suggests a hybrid—part avian and part human, a fantastical creature inspired like many of Miró’s sculptures, by the unconscious mind illuminated through dreams. Miró believed that forms expressed by an individual should disclose the activity of the mind that desires to escape from its present reality, seeking out new realities. From 1966 on, Miró produced sculptures based principally on small ceramic maquettes, and Oiseau was originally executed from one of these studies. Henry Segerstrom’s choice of a surrealist sculpture by Miró, throughout his life drew inspiration from intuition and dreams, wis unusual for the collector, Possibly, it was the playful, comical reference to a bird descended from prehistoric times or an extinct species that attracted Henry, or perhaps his thinking that others might be equally perplexed and delighted prompted the acquisition.
