Mao's Communist Revolution
After 8 long years of war with the Japanese, Mao's Communist Party of China continued with their civil war with Chiang-Kai-shek's Nationalists, successfully driving them out of China by 1949. On October 1st, Mao declared the establishment of the People's Republic of China. Over the next few years, Mao's sweeping reforms caused dramatic change to China for better or for worse. He seized private warlord land and turned them into people's communes. When faced with rejection or opposition, Mao would sometimes use persuasion, and at other times, would resort to violence and terror. His reform policies were less successful in cities, so he lauched the "Hundred Flowers Campaign" to allow those in urban areas to express their opinions in a democratic fashion. Although he expected minor criticism to his policies, Mao was astonished at the intense rejection and harsh rebuke he received. As a result, he ruthlessly suppressed resistors and labled thousands of Chinese as "rightists", imprisoning or killing them.
