the agreements of 1954 brought an end to the First Indochina war. Indochina was split into 3 countries : Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam. Vietnam was separated in 2 politic regims : the Vietminh established a communist state in the North led by Ho Chi Minh. Diem, in the South was supported by the USA, giving financial aid to wrestle against the monolithic communism from Moscow.
JFK sent 3000 militaries and new equipment and weapons to help the South Vietnamese government. It's the official beginning of the American involvement in Vietnam.

With regardto Vietnam, R. Nixon promised to achieve "Peace with honor". His aim is to negotiate a settlement that will permit the withdrawal of a half million US troops.

Saigon is captured by the People's Army of Vietnam and the National Liberation Front.
