Abraham Lincon Elected President
Abraham Lincoln was elected the 16th President of the United States of America. He was our first republican president winning 180 of 303 electoral votes, and 40 percent of the popular vote.

States Leave the Union
Six different states succeed from the Union to form a new nation called the Confederate States of America. South Carolina is the first to leave, followed quickly by Mississippi, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, and Texas.

Fort Sumter Attacked
On April 12th, Confederates, under the command of Pierre Beauregard, open fire upon Fort Sumter in South Carolina. This attack marks the beginning of the Civil War. This battle lasts until April 14, 1861.

More States Secede
Virgina secedes from the Union. Three more states follow, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Arkansas. This succession forms the eleven state Confederacy.

Proclamation of Blockade
President Lincoln issues a blockade against Southern ports. This is crucial for the northern states, because during the duration of the war this blockade limits the ability of the South to stay well supplied against the North.

First Battle of Bull Run
The Union army suffers a defeat at Bull Run. After much fighting, the Union troops fall back to Washington.

General Grant Victory
General Ulysses S. Grant gets victory in Tennessee. He captures Fort Henry, and 10 days later Fort Donelson.

Shiloh
Confederate troops surprise attack Union troops, under the command of General Grant, at Shiloh on the Tennessee River. This is a harsh battle resulting in 13,000 Union troops killed and wounded along with 10,000 Confederate troops.

New Orleans Taken
17 Union ships move up the Mississippi River and take command of the South's greatest port, New Orleans.

Second Battle of Bull Run
The second battle of Bull Run begins in northern Virginia. 75,000 federalists are defeated by 55,000 Confederates. The Union army again retreats to Washington.

Antietam
Confederate Armies are stopped in Antietam, Maryland by strong Union forces. This is know as the bloodiest battle in the U.S. military, by nightfall 26,000 men are dead or wounded.

Emancipation Proclamation
President Lincoln issues the Emancipation Proclamation. This freed all slaves in territories held by the Confederates. This proclamation also emphasized enlisting black soldiers in the Union Army.

Gettysburg

Chattanooga
Union troops run up the Missionary Ridge without orders and sweep the Confederates. This battle marks the revenge of the Union troops on the Confederates from a previous defeat at Chickamauga on September 19, 1863.

Lee Surrenders
The Confederates led by General Robert E. Lee surrender to the Union troops led by General Ulysses S. Grant, at the village of Appomattox Court House in Virginia.

President Lincoln is shot at Ford's Theater while seeing a play with his wife, Mary. He passes away the next morning.
