The Scientific Life of John Muir

John Muir was a farmer, inventor, sheep-herder, naturalist, explorer, writer, and conservationist, most famous for starting the national park movement in the United States.

This timeline is part of my project for Year 6 science.

John Muir is born

John Muir was born in Dunbar, Scotland to Daniel Muir and Ann Gilrye.

1849-02-19 17:16:15

John Muir moves to Wisconsin

John Muir's father, sister, brother and him started their journey to Wisconsin in February 1849. His mother only came in November. His father thought the Church of Scotland was not strict enough and so they left Scotland and joined a stricter Christian church called the Disciples of Christ.

John Muir arrives in New York

John Muir arrived in New York on the steamship the Warren, captained by Job G Lawton. From New York they made their way to Wisconsin.

John Muir attends university

According to the Sierra Club, John Muir "studied chemistry, math, physics, Greek, Latin, botany and geology," but did not complete a degree.

John Muir moves to Indianapolis

John Muir started work in a wagon wheel factory.

John Muir blinded in factory accident

John Muir was working in a factory when an accident occured. A file pierced his right eye and blinded him. Catherine Merrill then helped him regain his eyesight.

Yellowstone National Park

The first National Park was Yellowstone. Yellowstone was opened on March the 1st 1872

Yosemite National Park is formed

As a result of John Muir's pushing for it, President Benjamin Harrison signed the Yosemite National Park Bill on 1 October 1890.

John Muir forms the Sierra Club

The Sierra Club was founded to "make the mountains glad". According to the Sierra Club website, the club went on "help establish a series of new national parks and a national wilderness preservation system."

John Muir dies

Unfortunately, John Muir died on Christmas Eve 1914 in Los Angeles Hospital of pneumonia.

A one-mile in diameter minor planet is named after John Muir.

John Muir Way opens in Scotland

The 130-mile long John Muir Way in Scotland follows a route from Helensburg, the place where he left Scotland for the USA, to Dunbar, his birthplace.
