Elizabeth Keckley

Elizabeth Keckly was an African American dressmaker who, born in slavery, bought her own freedom, and became most famous for serving as the modiste for Mary Todd Lincoln and for writing a narrative about her life and time in the white house.

This timeline is also an interpretation. We include in addition to the dates, charts detailing the break down of the narrative, and bringing critical life to Keckley's text and means of stitching not only her dresses but her own narratives.
